Seems I am using telediscount...they were budgetcom and have been rebranded.

I pay 4.78 cents per minute Israel to Italy and 3.9 cents per minute to the US. Those are regular telephone calls (my mobile phone is incredibly more expensive) so I see no reason to download any computer phone programs.

I get unlimited free calling to the US and Canada from anywhere in the world (that has broadband internet capability). Wonders of Vonage. Just need to lug around a light box and the power supply.

Leave the box at home. Get a wifi voip phone and toss an airport express into your flight bag. Works great for me.

Any you recommend? I've been looking, but haven't found the perfect one yet. And aren't the Apple airport express devices generally bigger than the Vonage ATA boxes?

Thanks

A wifi phone can be provided by the VOIP company or some VOIP companies allow you to use your own equipment.

I have used the service www.teliphone.ca for over a year and it has met my needs.

I use the airport to create my own wifi network on the road. At most hotels i plug in the airport, turn on my laptop connect to the airport and then login into the hotel network. From behind the airport router any additional devices connected to the airport appear to the hotel network as one. Also useful to use your laptop from any location in your room and not just the location of the internet jack.

And the airport can also charge an ipod too!

FYI - looks like you should not have to wait much longer http://www.vonage.com/wifi/

That is good news. As 2005 is coming to an end, I hope Vonage is right and delivers well with that device. :) Thanks.

When I was in Spain for a semester with a prepaid cell phone the company, Amena, had a plan where you could pay about 3-4 euro to designate a number as a frequently called number which would decrease the price of calling the number by about 75%. I did this with an international calling card which cost about 5 or 6 euro for 500 minutes and then always bought the same card with the same access number. I was able to call the US for about .02 euro cents per minute from my cell phone anywhere in Spain.

Skype is definitely the best way to go. I use it and was surprised by how many across Europe are as well.

I always buy phone cards from newstands or the post office (in London they sell phone cards at the P.O.) to call home or go to call centers. In Spain for the holidays we found a phone/internet center that let us call back to the US for around 9 cents (euros) a minute. I thought that was pretty good.

Skype-out (for calling from a computer to a regular telephone)

If you will be using a computer in an internet shop, set up you Skype-out account before you leave home. Skype-out is for calling from a computer to a regular telephone. It is not free like regular Skype. Prices depend on the country called, but it is only about 2 cents per minute to call the USA.

You must put money into your Skype account with your credit card, so use you home computer for this. While you're at home, you should also enter your contact phone numbers into Skype, just to save you the trouble of doing this on the road. Then, access your Skype account from any computer (must have Skype downloaded or you must download the program) with a headset and microphone.

It's not always easy to find a computer in an internet shop that is set up correctly. With a good computer, there seems to be a slight time lag, and I have had a few dropped calls, but generally Skype-out works well.
