Ember Coaches

Ember is a coach company operating in Scotland - offering inter-city travel on an all-electric fleet of coaches. Their website is here: www.ember.to They operate round the clock, between Inverness - Thurso/Scrabster (4 buses a day), Inverness - Aberdeen / Glasgow / Edinburgh Glasgow - Fortwilliam, Edinburgh - Fort William, Glasgow and Edinburgh - Dundee and Aberdeen The thing that I find revolutionary about them is: * Fares are very good value, especially for one way journeys. For example, Wick to Inverness on Ember is £13.10; on Stagecoach is £21.60 * No amendment fees (up to departure time) * No cancellation fees (up to departure time) Prebooking is compulsary for lots of intermediate stops, and due to the way concession fares work in Scotland, buying on board is more expensive. Ember are taking delivery of another 100 fully electric coaches - they will overtake Scottish Citylink as the biggest long distance coach operator in Scotland.
Additionally, a bus fare cap of £2 has been introduced in Shetland, Orkney, Highland, Moray and Argyll & Bute. Unlike the English and Welsh fare cap, long distance operators are included. That means for example, a journey from Scrabster to Inverness (around 3 ½hrs) will be £2. A journey involving two coaches will be £4 (within the above regions). Inverness to Oban (a journey of 3hrs 5 minutes is £2! BE AWARE: A slight problem is that if you book Ember from say, Glasgow to Scrabster Harbour, it should charge the £2 from the Highland boundary, but it isn't. GLASGOW to SCRABSTER is showing as £36.75 on Ember. Whereas GLASGOW to DALWHINNIE is £13.75 DALWHINNIE to SCRABSTER is £4.00 Searching for Glasgow to Watten should therefore come up as £17.75, but it isn't. This doesn't seem to affect the other long-distance operator Scottish Citylink. In other Ember news, they now offer automatic refunds if your coach is 30+ minutes late.
