layover airport as destination
Not sure where to post this, but is it against the law that one books a one way ticket all the way to a destination but leaves the "layover" airport as that would cost less than putting the layover airport as the destination?
If you leave the airport, what happens to the return ticket?
Thanks,

This is well covered on here. Search for throwaway ticketing. All further flights on your reservation will be canceled, including all legs of your return (and no refund). You may not get any mileage credit. Yes it violates the rules of the ticket, but there is no statute or code you are violating.

indeed as Adam said and "no show" etc. but with a nice creativity you can always play as sick etc and officially leave the A/P with permission without ticket cancellation.

It's actually called "hidden city" ticketing. Any further flights on your itinerary are cancelled, so you can't do this with a round trip ticket, as your return will be cancelled.
If you plan to do this, don't check any luggage, as it will go to the original destination.

All posts above are correct, it does not break any law, but breaks Contract of Carriage, and will cancel rest of itinerary as soon as leg is missed. Since question is about one way travel, it has been reported that airlines (at least UA) will not pursue it.

it actually is either throwaway or hidden ticketing. The OP mentions both one way and return in their question. it may actually be both in this case. A roundtrip ticket A-B-C-B-A if you only intend to fly A-B would be throwaway and hidden city. A-B-C intending to fly A-B is hidden city only if B is a stopover, throwaway if B-C is a completely separate leg that drives the price down (making it a round trip or for other reasons).
In practice, they are both against contracts, and both result in the same cancellation of further flights.
"Playing sick" to get flights restored after a missed connect is risky and of arguable ethical value.

If you get sick, you file a claim for the lost value of your ticket with your insurance carrier.
There are a thousand threads on FT about this scam and how it can go wrong. Rather than listing them all out here, OP should go read them and figure out what he wants to do.
Hopefully he's not that desperate.
