Most of it duplicates cities served out of FLL, so they'd need to expand IAH flights to catch connections from more U.S. cities. Maybe it's also related to growing pains at FLL.
I hear Spirit is moving to MIA in 2015/2016.

I hope it's just a ploy to get FLL to expand more (which they're doing). It wouldn't matter so much for connections, but I'd go to south Florida less often if it was Miami. Terrible traffic.

I just don't think good ideas. They will not going to abandon FLL. They will stay at FLL.

Spirit to start ORD-LBE (Latrobe, PA) service...

Really?....

Good for them if they can make this city pair happen, but this is quite a stretch.

http://www.spirit.com/RouteMaps.aspx

I applaud Spirit and their very aggressive expansion. They are really coming at everyone.

ORD expansion.
ATL expansion.
Houston expansion (mainly seasonal)

I have been east of Pittsburgh and the area really seems to die off quite quickly. Pittsburgh traffic does suck during rush hour, but I really wonder if Latrobe, PA will have the demand to keep that route, in addition to some flights to Fort Myers/Tampa.

I am a little surprised that Spirit has not tried LBE to LGA or ACY flights. Technically these are drivable, but neither drive is particularly pleasant.

The Pittsburgh market is really the westernmost market for the AC casinos; maybe NK feels that the junkets already cover this?

Outside of some high legacy fares, Megabus and Greyhound are the only options to New York aside from driving. I would think NK could milk this.

I hope ORD works for them. It has to be better than the DFW route, which I thought was strange when I first heard about it.

Driving through PA is just straight up annoying.

MCI/ORD is getting dropped at some point in the future. I had a booking for August 10th that has been canceled...looks like the entire route (all days) is going away.

Too bad...I flew last week for $34 each way in BFS. (Base fare $0, junk fees $10, taxes $6, BFS $18.) Although I'll never fly in a 28" seat, I'd certainly book it again for a short backpack-only trip if the price is right and BFS is available. The aircraft were clean and the flights operated on time. Bummed we're losing it...

Bit of a sidebar, but I was not happy that Spirit required a phone call to cancel this itinerary. I shouldn't have to wait on hold and answer a bunch of questions of a phone agent to cancel an itinerary for a route that no longer exists and for which there's no rebooking option. This should be something I do online - period. Didn't appreciate the hard sell for the credit card either - totally unacceptable that I had to say no twice - and then hang up on the agent as she kept going on about the credit card.

Still, sad to see the route going away...

With LGA, it might require slot pairs, and NK is limited.

I agree the drive sucks and there should be low fare air service. It's too bad Frontier is abandoning ILG, as I figured an ILG-PIT might have worked (even though it doesn't service PIT either), even if the flight continued to ORD or MCO. At PHL, if it ever considers PHL-PIT, US will fare match.

PeoplExpress attained two EWR slot pairs as a new entrant carrier. I wonder if NK could apply with Port Authority of New York New Jersey for launch of EWR-LBE and this way cover both New York City region and the New Jersey market from the PIT region via LBE. If it did consider the route, it'd probably just be 1x daily not 2x daily.

I think that Costa Rica sums up the target traveler for Spirit:

Most legacies want to fly pax to resorts served by Liberia, NK only flies to San Jose @:-)

Quite surprising to me, as it seems like it's already a fairly saturated market. LAX-OAK is already served by Delta and Southwest, and if you include nearby airports they're also competing with United, AA, Virgin America, and JetBlue.

It costs $400 round-trip to fly Southwest next week. I think Spirit is hoping to attract leisure pax that decide rather last minute but will want a lower fare. Or those that just want a really low fare in advance (lower than Southwest's) as in maybe under $120 r/t. The problem is Southwest might fare match them for advance fares. Southwest's advance WGA fares are currently $77 one-way (Tues/Wed) and up.

Spirit is probably hoping that between the two large markets, there is enough of those passengers and with high fuel costs for the car and highway traffic, flying might still be a better choice than renting a car or taking one's personal car and just driving between So Cal and No Cal.

Just read in the Motley Fool, of all places, that Spirit is having a rough time in DFW due to competitive pushback. Which may explain why I was able to get AA for $86 on an ATL-DFW RT to see the Stones.

In a parallel universe MCI is a major hub, but in this one it just seems to be a chronic underachiever. I wish Spirit or Frontier would fly ATL-MCI direct, but it's iffy at best.
