Who we are: FlyerTalk features discussions and chat boards that covers the most up-to-date traveler information; an interactive community dedicated to the topic of travel (not politics or arguments about politics or religion, etc.)
All travelers are welcome in the community. Just choose a forum: conversing about airlines and their programs, airports, destinations, dining and how to make the most of your miles and points, or visit our Information Desk to start.
We do have some Rules, and everyone agrees to abide by these when they are granted free membership privileges. On a topic that generates a lot of feelings and perspectives, please remember "welcoming, respectful" are key words on FlyerTalk.
As with previous missing plane threads, please observe the following in this thread:
1. The normal FT Rules apply. (Including not discussing moderation actions on-thread). And please be particularly attentive to "discussing the idea and not the poster" when you have a disagreement. Civility and mutual respect are still expected and are what we owe each other as a community.
2. You are expected to respect our diversity, and therefore refrain from posting inflammatory comments about race, religion, culture, politics, ethnicity, orientation, etc." Do not cite, copy, or report on such.
3. Please do continue to be attentive to the sensibilities of the families of those on the flight. Think about if you were them what you would and would not want to see posted. Reasonable speculation about what happened is permissible; please, though, do not indulge in inflammatory or overly-lurid descriptions or depictions (or links to same) that could well be hurtful.
4. Overly / extravagantly exaggerative posts such as conspiracy theories, posts beyond the realm of science and known facts, etc. as well as posts with information that has been posted several times previously may be summarily deleted. Moderator actions may not be discussed in posts on FlyerTalk.

I was on EY474 AUH-CGK today. Read the news via the in flight Wi-Fi while my flight was at the moment I read it flying in the area between Singapore and Jakarta. It was indeed very cloudy there at 10km height, but I landed safe without turbulence.

6:19PM: The head of Basarnas, Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Mr Sutrisno, has been quoted by Detik.com as saying radars have yet to detect signals from the emergency location transmitter.
Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla is at Basarnas' mission control overseeing the search operations.

When I check flightradar24, I see still many planes flying in the very bad weather zone.

But then I don't feel to much at ease on busses here either .
If the bird will be found, likely a cause can be determined, and then we can seek for blame and exoneration. But now it is a lot too early.

This is really sad.

7:00PM: Channel NewsAsia understands that the Singaporean on board the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 was a two-year-old girl. She was travelling with her father, a British national. Her mother, who is Singaporean, had travelled back to Singapore earlier from Surabaya with the child’s older sibling.

I'm going to assume this French national was either the Captain or the FO.

That page also says that the flight code for AirAsia is AK, not QZ.
A quick search of QZ shows it was Indonesia and the aircraft rego starting with PK, and not 9M, confirmed it.
Claiming this is AirAsia (AK/Malaysia) is like saying Qantas has a problem if a GK (Jetstar Japan) flight goes missing.

I have flown with AirAsia a lot of times and also with other airlines in this area and have always had the upmost of respect for the pilots and aircraft technology when flying in this area with such volatile weather conditions.
It looks like a terrible accident, of which the exact cause will take a while to decipher and you have to just give thoughts to the family of the passengers and crew

I was on MH866 DPS-KUL this morning and saw the news via Twitter when I was in the KUL lounge.
Really frightening since the incident happened around the same area and timing of where MH866 was flying I guess.
