Hand Luggage [Bag 3cm over max - will I get away with it?]
I'm flying EDI-LHR-SIN soon and I would like to take my bag onboard with me but it is 3cms over the maximum length. Will I get away with it or have to check it in as I don't like to risk it being transferred from T5 to T4 and really don't want to arrive in SIN with no luggage.
Thanks

You can give it a go, but I do know that EDI security can be quite strict.
If it goes in the overhead locker lengthways, wheels first, then not a problem on the plane! If it sticks out like a hoojar, then it may be a different story.

Bear in mind you'll need to clear security twice: once at EDI and once at LHR T4. I'd do all you can to avoid checking it in - they've delayed my bag three times in the past 12 months on T5 -> T4 transfers.
You could pack one of these emergency folding bags in your hand luggage if move everything into that if necessary.

I did not think at LHR you went through security again after coming on from a Domestic Connecting flight... or is that just T5 to T5 flights?

Unfortunately there is on T5 to T4 - as of two months ago anyway. Assuming of course I'm not super unlucky and my transfer bus drivers always pull up at the wrong entrance. Certainly none as you say T5 - T5. I just wish they'd move the JSA flights to T5.

I have a carry on that is just the right size. I fairly regularly get asked by security to demonstrate it fits in the measurement cage. It just fits in the overhead wheels first (except on some plane that is occasionally used LHR-HEL, where no-ones bag seems to fit!) So an extra 3cm may be a problem and stand out.

If you Print Your Own Boarding pass and hand luggage only - you probably need to get your ID confirmed at LHR if you're still airside and making a connection.
If you had hold luggage, then you need to provide ID anyway at the baggage drop at the outstation. I believe there was a thread about this somewhere.

Is it a bag or a carry-on suitcase? I've somewhat frequently carried a full-to-the-brim, barely-closeable gym/duffel bag as hand luggage, and it's significantly more than 3cm too large in two dimensions. Never been had the size questioned. Anecdotal experience says that you're much less likely to have the size challeneged if it's soft bag as opposed to a carry-on suitcase.

I've flown EDI-LHR many times and I've always taken my roll-aboard suitcase as hand-luggage, even tough it is slightly larger than the maximum. I can't recall ever having a problem at check-in, security, the gate or on-board.

And your allowance on BA is a wheelie bag and small handbag or laptop. If your laptop bag is larger than your wheelie, then both BA and BAA could well ask you to check it in. We are increasingly loading into the hold bags which are too big to go on board.

The airline however has no obligation to accept a musical instrument as hand luggage and we insisted on gate checking it. He wasn't really bothered as he managed to dodge an excess baggage charge.
