Bumpy landing on camera

Further to the recent posts regarding the BA flight into LCY which resulted in collapsed nose gear, here is a Swiss Air bumpy landing caught on camera again at LCY. Fasten your seat belts.....

This was the one that ended up on a barge for weeks being fixed due to damage to the hull if I remember correctly...!

Indeed, I would not have liked to have been onboard that aircraft...

Shocking indeed. Would jumbodriver or other knowledgeable person care to say whether that was down to pilot error?

Bloody hell! The aircraft actually looks like it's about to topple over after the first touch of the tarmac.

Does anyone know what the circumstances of this landing were?

Yes. Looks like it happened on the 17th of Jan 2008 during strong cross winds. Here is a link to a report which includes photos of the damage:

We're getting a bit confused about incidents here!

Your link relates to an incident on 18th August 2007 involving one of Swiss' *A liveried aircraft. For the definitive report refer to this AAIB report:

http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources...YU%2008-08.pdf

The YouTube video notes that it relates to an incident on 17th January 2008 which may or not be right. But it's clearly not a *A livery and thus isn't the incident you linked to.

As to what did happen - I can't find any reports on it and suspect it might just have been marked off as a normal LCY landing.

Safe Landings!

Thanks for correcting that error. Mind you if that kind of landing is 'normal' for LCY then its easy to see why the landing gear of all carriers gets quite a hammering. Maybe we should be surprised that there are not more incidents like last weeks with the BA flight.

The landing in question was the result of windshear destabilising the final approach and the crew attempting to land rather than go-around. A go around would have been the text book / training Sim version of events. The crew later acknowledged this to be the case and had allowed other pressures to decide to continue to land. So rather than crew error more operational factors was the primary cause.

There were no injuries to crew or pax. The maintenance team performed the std heavy landing check as recommended by BAe and no damage was found and the a/c returned to service. A testimony to the BAe design and build.

I for one will be interested in how an E-jet or copes with such operational practises.

Aero Safety

Ps the other thread on Friday's accident wrongly suggests the previous 2 BA events to be similar cause. The facts from the investigation will be more informative than wild speculation
