From the bbc web site;

A US Airways Airbus A320 passenger plane carrying 135 people has crashed into the Hudson River in New York, the Federal Aviation Administration says.

Rescue boats and ferries are alongside the plane attempting to pick up people standing on both of the plane's wings.

The plane, which the FAA said was flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, is partially submerged.

It is not known how the plane came to land in the river, but the FAA said it might have been due to a bird strike.

More details to follow.

Absolutely astonishing...and proves it's possible to do a survivable water ditch contrary to what some people think. Just watching on Sky News - appears to be an amazing piece of airmanship so far. Airborne less than 3 minutes apparently.

Just been watching this on Fox - looks like the pilots did the most incredible job, they're reporting that everyone has got out alive.

Been watching it on TV here in NY. Talk about weird. Seems like a lucky escape for the majority. The floating/slowly sinking A320 is a strange sight.

Pictures are only possible in certain fora and this forum isn't - yet - one of them.

I'm on my mobile, so I might have missed detail of that photo, but how come none of the folk standing on the wings are wearing life jackets? Or getting in the wee rafts?

Watching the news pictures on Sky it looked like some did have life jackets on and some didn't. They also did get in to the rafts where possible.

I'd imagine at the moment of impact most people forget to reach under the seats and just head for the exit.
Lets hope the positive images/reports are right.
Quite amazing to think how survivable modern accidents seem to be.
Thinking back to the BA 777 crash at LHR as well.
