That is insane! I cant believe they were able to ditch on the water. Thought that was nigh on impossible. Full marks to the pilot.

What a miracle!

One could only imagine what would have happened if the plane went down in the city, or broke upon impact, or caught fire. Someone was looking out for that flight

Too true. The pilot apparently considered trying for Teterboro Airport, a nearby corporate-jet airport in NJ, but had no power and not enough altitude. He was able to bring the aircraft to a stop, intact, right in front of the Manhattan ferry terminals. Rescue boats alongside within minutes and most pax didn't get wet above their knees. Still air temp at the time 21F, so this is a borderline miraculous outcome.

thanks guys re. pics

Sounds amazing - what a miracle everyone survived.

Now we know everyone is fine, I guess it's okay to ask "how many service recovery miles do you think they'll get?" hehe

Quite miraculous - full marks to the pilots and also the boats that stopped.

Anyone know yet of the cause? Presumably engine failure?

EDIT: Person onboard said "Left engine blew 3-4 mins after takeoff".

All tv reports currently saying bird strike. The engine blew up in air.

That's one impressive landing!

Probably a good chance for us to express out thanks to Jumbodriver, Bellerophon and colleagues for nicely balancing the safe landings with take-offs.

Current analyst shown on BBC is not explaining things half as well as spottie.

For those trying to find a working USair forum link, here you go:

Michael Bloomberg (Mayor of NYC) has just referred to "checking that everyone on that boat is accounted for"....a very appropriate slip of the tongue

Major kudos to the pilots for the landing, and props to the local boats & emergency services for getting people out of the cold asap.

And apparently the pilot was the last one off, walking the aisle twice to make sure everyone was off - he then got on a boat.

All pretty damn impressive.

Apparently the Mayor of Charlotte has offered to shout the pilot a drink!

The reports say both engines were out which is why they decided to ditch. I could see the plane in the river from the roof of my apartment building - it was rather strange.
