Red face Slightly OT: LHR virtual strip search?

EU MPs concerned by airport full-body scanners, Reuters, 23 Oct 08

Airport full-body scanners that show people's private parts are a virtual strip search, European Union lawmakers said Thursday, calling for detailed study of the technology before it is used... "I think this is an offence against human dignity. Using this technology does not make us safer," said the leader of the assembly's Socialist group, Martin Schulz. "These are machines that allow for you to be seen totally naked," Schulz said.

although I'm very pro privacy, this idea excites me. I find airport security extremely humiliating and incredibly un-British.

If we can just walk past a security checkpoint without being manhandled, then I'm all for it!

You won't be able to "just walk past a security checkpoint without being manhandled" even with these machines in place. Even a metal-free wallet in the pocket could be sufficient for the screener to make sure you are "being manhandled" too.

More manhandling with these machines than for someone who doesn't trigger the WTMD.

Much as I dislike airport security, that is more because it makes an assumption that I am a bad person until I can prove otherwise. I don't like having my integrity doubted.

But I have no objection to people seeing me naked (or apparently naked) and have never quite understood what the hang-up with nudity is all about.

Darling - for some here - it will be the end of one of the last thrills of travelling!

Now I understand that these scanner reveal everything!!

What I think would be far more interesting is who I will nominate to go through to demonstrate this.

Have you ever done the T4 security disco "poses"? It makes Strictly Come Dancing (or Dancing with the Stars) a doddle.

I do not think its just walking pass a security check point.

Often, my only tan-line is is the watch-strap on my arm after a beach holiday so I am not personally overly concerned.

I have been through the T4 one and the operators were very happy to show you your picture. As I recall there were amorphous grey lumps with no clarity at all. More can be seen on a beach in the summer!

Well I find the whole thing outrageous.

Whilst there at it why not give the scanner people score cards, they can give you marks out of ten and further humiliate you PUCCI.

Indeed. The whole thing was hilarious. The image was also slightly distorted, so my shape looked even closer to a circle (sphere?) than I actually am.

The only thing that worries me about being put into one of these full-body scanners is the amount of employee liability compensation they will have to pay to the screeners to look at my image.

I think I saw a large number of plastic bins to hand! Normal aircraft barf bags wouldn't do!

The machines used in T4 and some other terminals for a while at LHR were back-scatter X-rays and can be adjusted for image quality (and are) -- also my bet is that FTers here were shown their backsides instead of their front sides or they put the image shields up for down below.

Those x-ray images are not as detailed as what comes up with the other types of radiation used to generate virtual strip search images nor is it representative of the devices mostly used in the EU.

You have almost certainly not seen the images of when you were screened by those non-x-ray devices -- those more ordinarily detailed images are only viewable in a back-office location that is not just around from the machine itself.

Martin Schulz -- on the other hand -- certainly knows of the variety of images produced from the different technologies. He's an informed member of the European Parliament when it comes to these technologies in use.

10 out of 10 may embarass but it would not humiliate me!

We'd all know when you would be going through as there would be gales of laughter.

Anyway - who cares? Or would you miss the pat-down Poppet?
