Fantastic! I just came from Havana last Friday, and was fortunate to see the usual array of unusual aircraft at HAV including a parked Il62, notoriously a VC10 copy (I did see a flying version a few years back in Havana); seeing the VC10 video reminds me just how much ancient history one can still witness at Havana airport.

Drowning in Waves of Nostalgia Dept...

Top links ^^

Ahhhhh! When BEA was Back Every Afternoon and BOAC was Better On A Camel.

Apart from the height of the Profumo scandal, of course, when it briefly became Bend Over Again Christine...

Don't seem to recall any apposite and alternate BA acronyms, though.

Unless this esteemed board can suggest otherwise...

"During the 1970s, passenger inconvenience through poor flying conditions will be almost eliminated..."

They forgot the "except when you want to fly out for Christmas, every damn year" bit.

Excellent, excellent films.

Can someone please enlighten us younger members: what was the West London Air Terminal? Where was it? Does the building still exist?

I used to work there from 78-80. On the Cromwell Rd (A4) nr. Gloucester Rd tube opposite IIRC the Penta Hotel. Demolished to create a Sainsburys supermarket, but not sure now. Rather like HKG today, pax would check-in, drop bags and take a bus to LHR. WLT was the BEA city check-in location; BOAC had their own at Buckingham Palace Road in Victoria.

Many thanks koksy I loved the "we shall be serving cocktails and you may smoke if you wish", and the music of course ^^

I wonder where these were shown? I loved the scenes of the control center with the chalk boards. I also loved the announcement that if you didn't have your cigarettes they'd provide them for you.

I believe the West London Air Terminal was converted into the Supermarket rather than being demolished to make way for it. It's now a Listed building.

And the rest of it above the supermarket (were they BA offices?) has been converted into flats. I think the building is called Point West or something like that. And the Earls Court-Gloucester Road-High Street Kensington triangular Tube junction encircles (entriangulates?) the stilts of its foundations.

And I'm looking forward to the videos - thanks for them, koksy!

Crikey, if it's the Sainsburys on Cromwell Road, that's my local supermarket when I do a big shop (we use M&S, Waitrose, Harvey Nicks and Harrods for the convenience items around here, darlings). I can't believe it's a listed building.

I believe that the Penta Hotel being referred to is now a Holiday Inn and has been for about five years now, and in between times has been known as the Forum Hotel. It's the tallest hotel in the UK at 27 storeys (wow!).
