New LCY - JFK service with A318 - starts 2009

Wow!!! ^

We have ordered two Airbus A318 aircraft to operate our planned business only
services from London City airport to New York in 2009.

Well this is indeed a suprise!
Did we know anything about this?
I didn't even know they had any plans for A318's...

Edited to add: I thought the flights from Europe are going to operate with J and W only, but according to this they are going to operate with Y as well...

This new service announcement deserves a thread of its own.

I am also very surprised at this. Are we to assume LCY will get a BA lounge?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/120 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.1)

How will BA get the slots at JFK for this given current uncertainties over whether OpenSkies will get slots at JFK? Will BA cut other frequencies ex-JFK?

No-one saw this coming and good to see more plans for expansion.

I hastily wrote JFK, but it does just say "New York" so it remains to be seen whether this becomes a EWR service. Now what WOULD be interesting is if they somehow got permission to fly into LGA. However, I think I read somewhere that there is a 1,500 mile distance limit on flights into or out of LGA.

LCY-LGA would be the ultimate and would command a hefty premium to boot.

Article in today's Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/mai...1/bcnba101.xml

(It has no mention of which airport will be used over the other side of the pond.)

Does LGA have any international flights at all i.e. does it have immigration and customs facilities?

PhilH I'm hearing rumours that the outbound will be Via (SNN) SHANNON and the return will be direct?

It does have international flights but only from Canada I believe where pre-clearance takes place before boarding. It never used to have Immigration / Customs but am not sure now.

There are comments from BA on bloomberg that they'll be a 40 minute refuel stop, point not yet chosen. How about Bangor, and do all the immigration while waiting?

From Wikipedia:

The airport has INS/FIS facilities capable of processing customs and immigration on arriving international flights; the facilities are insufficient to handle efficiently the number of passengers that a non-precleared scheduled airline service would require.
So, immigration and customs is conceivable, but problematic.

What likely kills it for LGA, though (also from Wikipedia):

A perimeter rule prohibits incoming and outgoing flights that exceed 1,500 miles (2,400 km)—except on Saturdays, when the ban is lifted, and to Denver, which was grandfathered in — so most transcontinental and international flights use the area's other two major airports, JFK and Newark.[6]
