Sorry, I should have been more clear, but the rule we were discussing was, as posted earlier in the thread:

"I thought the rule was that G before N in the same syllable is not pronounced."

And as for the other three, are you sure "gnarl" etc. have a pronounced G? From the OED:

gnarl (nA:Rl), v. Obs. [frequentative f. gnar

Happy to be corrected though... James

Why do all Scots have a chip on their shoulder?

I mean, half the world wishes they were English, but they get on with their lives. The Scots have so much Anglo-envy that it takes over their lives.

On the subject of devolution IMHO it doesn't go far enough - why should London and the South East continue to subsidise the rest of England, let alone the other parts of the UK. Perhaps Londonair wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.

I learn something new every time I visit this forum on FT. I never spotted 'foreign' as an exception but spelled it correctly. I wonder how this happened.

Along with sovereign, feign, deign, reign and so on.

The rhyme is usually not quoted in full:

I before E except after C, or before G.

Who knows the exceptions?

I don't really care for the Scottish accent but boy are they good kissers.

So Happy St Andrews day to them.

Which reminds me, is Scot Air a subsidiary of BA? ie on the LCY EDI route if you book on BA will you be on BA metal.

a) are you referring to the men or the women? (I think I already know the answer).

b) on the reasonable assumption that you are referring to the men, does the fact that they wear a kilt 'facilitate things' as it were?

No jokes please about his two favourite Scotsmen - Ben Dover and Phil McCavity.

ScotAir is owned by arch-homophobe and generally nasty person Brian Souter and should be boycotted on principle BA however flies with its own metal LCY-EDI and the route has thankfully been saved from the BACON sale to FlyBe. ^

now be very careful about mentioning dead witches - they have a habit of re-appearing when you least expect them
