OT:Harrods,Selfridges & Harvey Nicks vying for T5 spot

As long as they don't block the windows

Harrods is in talks with BAA over the prospect of opening a small department store in the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow.

The new terminal, which is currently under construction, is likely to feature the top Knightsbridge store as its centrepiece, with Mohammed Al Fayed's world-famous shop the favourite to take the site.

Other top stores vying for the 12,000sq ft of space at the terminal include Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

Colin Hargrave, the managing director of airport operator BAA, told Drapers Record: "Harrods is an important business partner of ours and we have Harrods stores in a number of our terminals already."

However, the new store is likely to be much bigger than the others, which generally only sell souvenirs and small items, featuring more clothes and fashion items for travelling shoppers.

A spokesman for Harrods admitted: "Harrods has a valuable relationship with BAA so we are in conversation with them about opportunities at T5."

The controversial new terminal is expected to open in spring 2008

Just goes to show that BAA is more concerned with creating shopping malls rather than airports which are easy to navigate and use.

The Harrods merchandise is obviously aimed at US tourists who see no problem in spending a fortune on a Harrods teady bear.

How about BAA creating more space for travellers to sit, relax and perhaps work if they want to.

Not everyone wants to go shopping at an airport.

You would think a Tesco Metro might be of more benefit for miles top ups :D

I think its ridiculous having these posh shops at the airport. What we should have is a true reflection of where the majority of Brits shop. Now, should it be Matalan or Primark? :D ;)

Please, for the love of God, a food court run by Borough Market.
