Strange riddle of the missing miles...

Just to test EC members prowess at tracking down missing miles, here's a simple riddle: 3 travellers decide to pool their miles for a holiday. Together they have 30,000 miles and the fights cost 10,000 each. After booking the free flights, the agent realises she forgot the "shrink the planet" 5000 mile reduction bonus that applies to the booking if three travel together and is just about to call the frequent flyers to hand back the 5000 miles when she realises that 5000 can't be evenly split 3 ways. She decides to avoid the fight, pops 2000 into her own account and gives them 1000 each. Now they have each paid 9000 miles ok? Well, 9000 * 3 = 27000 miles plus the 2000 that the naughty agent kept= 29,000 miles...so where did the remaining 1000 miles go to?

Very good. The old ones are always the best.

Its a balance sheet problem, isn't it... credits vs debits.

The 9,000 * 3 is a DEBIT i.e. negative
The 2,000 is a CREDIT i.e. positive

so the calculation is bogus and the correct one would be:

-(9,000 * 3) + 2,000 = -25,000

which balances with the cost of the flight.

nice

Wow that was quick - but I'd have been worried if it had taken you any longer!

What is the Shrink the Planet offer? Have not seen anything on this on the website. What are the T&Cs of this? Does it work for two, four pax travelling together? Is it seasonal?

Apologies for any misunderstanding..."shrink the planet" is totally ficticious, but if EC would like to take note and introduce it for Xmas, I think we'd all raise a cheer! Airmiles.co.uk used to have "Shrink the world" offers but have sadly withdrawn these without warning - a matter which I have grumbled about here a couple of weeks back.

Did you believe the bit about the agent dumping the miles into her own account too?
