The Journalists Guide to Writing About BA

OK, so this could be about any airline, but BA is the one I know.

Here are some top tips to journalists when writing about British Airways...

1. Always refer to BA as "self-styled as The Worlds Favourite Airline" then mention how Jet2 gets better reviews. Oh and how you used to get a G&T in economy.
2. A new route always "Takes Off". Here is an example (you're welcome): "BA Summer Services from Stansted Take Off"
3. A new route can also "Fly High" or variations thereof. "British Airways flies high with new route to...."
4. A new route can also "Take Flight". "BA takes flight with new route to..."
5. BA's profits don't increase, they soar.
6. IAG shares don't rise or fall, they experience turbulence.
7. Oh I just remembered, a new route can also "Take Off".

I've run out of things about BA, but for Ryanair always mention that they were going to ask you to spend more than a penny to spend a penny. (Even though that was never going to happen, it makes good reading).

Any other tips, FlyerTalkers?

8. Dont publish stories about XXX flights from USA/Asia and then use an Airbus 319 picture

Describe anyone who uses a lounge as an elite traveller or also use for a Bronze card holder who makes a complaint.

Any article that talks about Concorde "harks back to the golden age of travel."

  • Refer to any piece of tarmac that a plane's wheels touch as "the runway"
  • Caption a photo: "British Airways Boeing 319NEO departs from Heathrow" ... photo shows a 747 landing.

use pictures of BA planes they dont operated anymore (like 747/757), for interior any stock photo of aircraft interior will do (doesnt need to be passenger aircraft)
bonus points for using wide body aircraft pictures when talking about shorthaul operations.

Club Europe = FIRST CLASS
Club World = FIRST CLASS
First Class = FIRST CLASS

Every door into or out of the CCR = MILLIONAIRE'S DOOR
Everyone in the CCR = CELEBS AND VIPS

“Fine dining at 36,000 ft with premium wines” deserves a mention too

use the word "headwinds" to explain any sort of dip in the IAG share price

anyone misbehaving on a BA plane must have been "quaffing" or "glugging" "wine and spirits" (tabloids) or their inebriated state can only be explained through the medium of the phrase "told the Court" (broadsheets)

Galleries Club is "luxurious" - make no distinction between that and the CCR

the IT - in whatever context it's being described - is "beset by problems" (that one's actually fair)

Gold card is "elite" or "the most elite" flyers - anything above Gold cannot compute

Write all articles from the perspective of BA's passengers being on bucket and spade holidays - "jetting off abroad", "flying to the sun", "British holidaymakers"; completely ignore that BA make most of their money from business travel and have a ton of non-UK to non-UK connections
