BA companion voucher not opening up seats like before

Hi all,

In previous years when i searched with the Amex companion voucher, seat availability would be much better compared to doing a normal Avios search.
In other words, many seats would open up.

I've just received my voucher for this current year and there are no extra seats opening up?
Availability is dreadful.

Any ideas why? Does the voucher no longer increase availability?

A solution to this can sometimes be to look for flights starting from MAN, NCL, EDI, GLA etc. as there tends to be more I class availability (which is what the voucher is pulling from) on those routes.

Of course it could just be one of BA's many technical issues.

I think its only for the new vouchers from September 2022 onwards where there has been extra availability beyond reward seats in J. Other than that, 241 vocuhers require reward seats.

Also as I understand it, it is long haul only.

this helps with the incoming flight. thanks.
Doesn't help on the outgoing

Is it possible to use the voucher on an open-jaw route? e.g. fly into JFK but return from BOS?
If so, do I have to book it over the telephone?

Yes, and you need to call.

Availability is decent as noted above, starting from the regions. Not daily to SYD, MLE etc but there is lots more availability on lots of routes compared to checking without the voucher

I see loads of availability when I enable an Amex companion voucher – more than without it. And yes, the extra seats are only visible when you’re using one of the newer vouchers. In my case, it worked with a voucher I got last year, and it also works with one that I just got this year. Hope that helps. Are you just looking for a very “in-demand” route?

If you have enough Avios in your account (and are worried about availability disappearing) you can book the outbound using the 241 and the inbound without. That way you hold your seats. Then when you call you ask to get them joined up and you get the 241 applied to the whole trip (and you get the ‘excess’ Avios returned). Should be no change in the taxes and fees though.

PS And I don’t believe you have to pay a change fee because what you want to do is not possible online.

Bear in mind that there is a BA Business Class sale currently running. This will limit I-class inventory availability which is also used for the Amex voucher seats in CW. Perhaps try after the sale ends when the I inventory is normally increased again.

it's a BAH promotion rather than a flight only sale.

The business class sale finished at midnight I think.
Amex availability seems to be working as expected for me.
