Lost/Stolen Carry On Case
Any ideas on this one?
My son was flying yesterday GLA-LHR-BOS. On arrival at LHR his carry on was missing from the overhead locker. He waited until everyone had disembarked but there was no bags left on the aircraft - fortunately his passport/laptop etc was in a rucksack under the seat. He went to the BA desk to report it and by the time he had done this he missed his connection - fortunately they moved him to a later flight.
Anyway, the BA desk said that they couldnt help and told him to phone the BA lost luggage line. Hes back in BOS now but the BA line is saying that they cant help unless he has a checked luggage reference number.
Should he try customer service as his insurance are saying they need a BA reference number? Im wondering if he should report it stolen to the Police and try giving the insurance a crime number?

I would raise a brief complaint on
BA.com/complaints
Since this should generate an automated email incident number which should keep the insurance company happy. Take plenty of screen shots. It's counter intuitive but it is best putting luggage into the overhead on the opposite side of the aisle.

People think that they're in the land of the honest once through airport security and thus lower their guard by a few percentage points.
I was queueing at the gate in Glasgow some years ago, and looked down by my side to see my black trolleybag gone. I looked across and saw a chap walking off with it. I ran over and said that was my bag to which he apologised for walking off with the wrong bag! He had villain and liar written all over him.
They purchase a 10 easyJet ticket, get themselves a boarding card and then prey airside.

I did think this last week when somebody mentioned a "Self Upgrader" that had sat in a CE seat as it was the only place he/she could store their bag. Some people are more cautious than others, and prefer not to be separated from their bags.

Occam's razor says it is still in GLA. However, if it were stolen, the only explanation I can think of was that it was placed in he front of the plane and the passenger sat in the back and the culprit saw that. Otherwise who would take the obvious risk of being caught?

For this reason I did not like it last week when the crew had to move one of our bags back a few rows to get things wedged in more efficiently. Didn't feel like we could object though! As we were in row 1 we had no ability to put it under our seats instead, which is the downside of sitting there of course. It was fine this time, but I don't like them being behind us so somewhere we can't possibly see.

Someone once mistakenly took my all too generic black laptop backpack on arrival at GLA from LHR a few years ago. I realised as soon as I stood up, there could only have been a handful of pax in front of me. A quick word with the FAs, they suggested to hot foot it up the looong corridor at GLA to see if I could catch up with the culprit, or just go to lost luggage. No sign of anyone or my bag, I resigned myself to reporting it lost (or possibly stolen) at the baggage counter in reclaim; but to my astonishment the chap already knew what I was on about, and two mins later it appeared on the carrousel ! No idea who took it, or how it managed to find its way onto the carrousel, but all contents were still there.
I now have some bright identifiers on my bag, and no, not BA tags ! Honest mistakes do happen and I feel for the OP and their son, it feels absolutely rotten when it happens

I had someone take my bag out of the overhead a few rows in front of where I was sitting. I let the person know that it was my bag, they put it back and did not take a bag of their own...they simply walked off the plane...

Another bag of many tags, I love it!
On a serious note to OP though, invest in tile or air tags, they’re cheap enough against the cost of your luggage, consider them insurance. I have tiles in the lining of every case and bag I use regularly and thankfully never needed them.
