An option to spice it up, but only to CHC I believe is that you can take a QF coded EK flight on AU/NZ. You will earn avios as long as it is coded to QF.
I am confused on the “cheap” TT GBP 700 flight that is in Y. Perhaps you are booking too early? As TT flights are quite cheap with QF, JQ, NZ, EK, LA and I think even one of the Chinese carriers also making the flight. But of course miss the QF through check policy.
look out for the QF sales as you can often get J for sub AUD$1000 return which would make it more interesting esp if on EK or one of the QF 787/330s

Just use Avios on SYD-AKL-SYD. It's 11,000 per pax one way in Y or 22,000 per pax in J. Absolutely do not pay the J fare. With Avios it's a bargain!
That being said, it's a three hour flight, just do it in Y and select row 4 on the 737. I find QF J across the Tasman to be underwhelming compared to BA apart from the seat.

We had access to the First lounge at SYD through my Exec Club GGL card and that is a perfectly acceptable place to spend the day eating some excellent food. It was so good, no food needed to be eaten on the flight up to SIN.

Just wanted to say that last night managed to get the return segment booked - a few days later than originally planned but actually the extra time in NZ is a better result - just means we'll be relegated to the business lounge on the way back but we will have the first it on the way there

I just book via BA - so if nothing is available, there's nothing there.
When you look at February, for example, there is plenty of seats with Avios on Qantas Sydney to Auckland and back - so there must be nothing for the dates you're looking at.

On some of the smaller routes you need to call. And there’s a lot of fun trying to spell Maroochydore to a BA CS on the phone.

I just spell out MIKE-CHARLIE-YANKEE, and they type it in and confirm 'Sunshine Coast Airport'. Of course, some flights to MCY are QF mainline so bookable on ba.com, the QantasLink rotations are a pain!

That's economy, business is 44,000 Avios and the same taxes. Now that is spectacular value vs the cash fare.

The cash fare is around Ł700 for Sep dates I want (2 passengers) and I only have 10k avios left after redeeming everything so it would cost more to buy those avios than it would to just pay he cash fare as far as I can tell.
