Is it still possible for reservation staff to put a code into a booking to flag up that you would be a good candidate for an upgrade if one is available? I seem to remember many years ago being told about a Suitable For Upgrade flag, but I have no idea if it was true.
My route only has J and I only fly J, but on the very rare occasions when I've had to book W every single time I have been offered either a free or a cheap upgrade.

On a separate PNR from an outstation the following week the check-in staff moved me to the only available Y seat on an earlier flight when originally ticketed in J, but put a flag on the system to upgrade me if there were no shows (which there were; J BP was already waiting for me at the gate, and there were empty seats again in Y).
