If I was in need of an extender belt I’d have more serious concerns about my health

The OP must be right. I have also the impression that the planes are getting shorter, especially the A380, ageing problem?

I read somewhere that the seat belts get frayed, so they are trimmed. Thus, some will be shorter than others. I had a very snug one on EasyJet a few weeks back.

Units of measurement generally get shorter as time goes on. It's an unchangeable rule of physics. 30 years ago I used to buy 32 inch jeans. Now I have to buy 38 inch to achieve the same fit. Jeans are getting smaller.

The most fraying would be on the edges of the strap though, not the thick hemmed end, no? Don't think I've seen thinner straps.

I do occasionally have to twist the buckle mechanism around on the strap so that the release is on top. Not easy, but doable. (No, I don't have my neighbour's strap by mistake; it's been installed on the wrong side.)

Not sure if I'm just noticing it more of if it's become more frequent but 'flipped' buckles (or twisted straps) has been a thing I've noticed more of recently (like post pandemic). On many seats it's easily fixed but not all alas. (not really a BA only issue)

Never come close to having an issue on BA, but I did on a recent Ryanair flight - started to worry about putting on a few pounds for a bit with how tight it was, until the return flight when it fitted fine!

From what I understand it’s close to this. The seatbelts come from the factory fairly long. If any issues occur, instead of replacing the entire thing, they cut off the bad part, reattach the fastener, and it’s fixed. It’s why you can see variances in seatbelt length on the same aircraft, even within the same row.

Yep happened to me years ago on Ryanair, I was in the emergency row so he said he couldn’t give me an extender.

insisted I sat in another row to which I demonstrated that meant I was lodged off the seat by the length of my thighs. Which one do you want was my ask!

iirc I eventually got the thing in but it was circulation cutting for 20 mins
