Well I don’t know much about Westjet, but i think it is quite a low cost already. Not sure what additional ‘value’ Cruz will bring!

He's in the board but, effectively, in a fairly non-executive role. I think he hasn't had a very successful career after BA, and rightly so IMHO.

Oh good lord. Well I hope he ends up in a hi viz in the middle of a Calgary winter shovelling snow.

WestJet are a perfectly good airline, they really don’t need Alex’s input

There’s nothing particularly low about WestJet’s prices. Internal flying in Canada seems to be an expensive business in my experience. The costs of their LHR-YYC flights don’t seem particularly cheap either.

Benjamin Smith I can see the logic of because they’ve been leaning towards Skyream for a while, Alex not so much.

No such thing as consequences for the C-Suite class.

Is that why Westjet had a systemwide IT outage a couple of days ago?

At the topmost ranks, it's an extraordinarily interbred industry. People who've destroyed value on a grand scale, or even entire airlines, keep getting picked up to run or direct other airlines, over and over.

Not specifically mentioned in the Press Release as linked by OP, but If I’m not mistaken (?) Alex first became involved with WestJet some time ago.

I personally take a good deal of comfort from this announcement of his elevation to a higher role @ WS, if only because it significantly reduces the possibility of him joining any of the carriers with which I happily book on the basis of the overall quality of their service standards.

Ben Smith used to be a VP at Air Canada, so that makes perfect sense to me. I'm not sure what value Alex Cruz can bring to WS.
