Fairly urgent - Ba410 LHR to IBZ cancelled 27.08
Hi all,
Currently on the HEX, but we were enjoying the now obligatory buffet lunch in the first lounge at T5 when 20 mins before our flight to Ibiza was meant to leave, we were informed via the app and on the screens that it was cancelled. The gate staff said it was due to staff shortages, the email said it was due to air traffic control and weather, this obviously determines whether we fall under UK261. (I think)
This booking was part of a 5 night BA holiday, with hotel booking.
We phoned ba holidays and There was nothing available today, apart from a night stop in Zurich, so weve opted for a 2pm cityflyer flight tomorrow. We will therefore arrive in Ibiza exactly 24 hours late.
BA holidays saying that there is nothing available next Saturday for the return, to keep our package at 5 nights. So they are saying we can come back on Sunday, but we will be liable for the extra night of accommodation in Ibiza.
What are my rights here? We are going back to our flat in London tonight, but presumably I can expense the Heathrow express and our dinner? Also do I really need to pay for our sixth night in Ibiza?
Thanks as always

Your best bets are the EC261 thread and the Disruption signpost thread. But you can claim the HEX fare, I think a meal out tonight may be a bit iffy, since you are at your own home. I know that sounds odd because you could have billed a hotel and meals instead, but these are provisions for being stranded, which isn't really the case here. For the new 6th night, that was a bit tough of BAH not to take that on. Either they give you a 5 day option (was there really nothing via MAD or BCN?) or they pay the 6th night. I think they will pay it since EC261 would clearly imply this. Unlike with BA bookings, on BAH you can and should claim for loss of enjoyment for the package arrangement.

Thanks CWS. I will call BAH again when we get home and see if there is anything with a connection on Saturday. Im not too worried, as the customer service/service recovery from BAH has been good in the past. I note all the cityflyer flights are now cancelled today, so there must be something going on with weather/atc. Awfully handled by BA at Heathrow, I think a lot of people were effectively making the decision to give up their holiday today, it seems we were really lucky to get a rebook tomorrow, on a flight that the lady described as -5 in economy and -2 in club, just praying our gold and silver status keeps us safe!
Update - looks like we can come back to stansted next Saturday on a very random cityflyer positioning flight, so hopefully that sorts us, might even be able to call on the parents in Saffron Walden for a free taxi and Saturday night dinner.

So this turned from an annoyance into a total mess this morning.
Our LHR printed boarding passes for our London city flight werent accepted at LCY this morning, and we were told we have been re-booked from LHR via Barcelona this evening with BA/Vueling, getting us into Ibiza at 11pm. No email, no phone call, not showing in the app.
Weve been put in a taxi to LHR, where we have about 5 hours to kill. BAH say they will now cover hotel until Sunday and have placed us on a flight back on Sunday evening.
Am I now due EU261 twice for being delayed more than 3 hours twice on the same booking? What else should I be pushing for in this complaint now, as this has totally ruined our bank holiday weekend to be honest?

Why do I have the feeling this is going to get worse before it gets better?
After OP got their boarding pass at LCY the UK ATC system shut down adding another 5 hours to estimated departure times.
I think there are special rules that let you get a refund if there is now no point to your trip. Might they apply in this case?

Correct - cancelled again, I understand today’s issues, but really hard to swallow with yesterday’s and this morning’s sh*t show from ba. I’ve defended them to the hilt in the past, but the way they handle these delays leaves so much to be desired. Now got to wait for our bad and decide if we want a third attempt tomorrow or to bin our summer holiday, and pay whatever the (much higher) going rate is for a new one.
If you can, see if you can get away in September. Cheaper, should still be 26c+ and more relaxed getting there and back. I'm back there first week October.

If there's any consolation here, I go Ibiza 4 or 5 times a year and would much prefer September or June. I totally avoid August now. It's just manic this side and their side. Hotels 100% booked up, you arrive at a chaotic airport, roads really busy, hard to get in restaurants. Just no fun.

Now on standby for the 19.25 to BCN and a night-stop, with 8am onward flight tomorrow. Otherwise apparently on the 16.20 from Gatwick tomorrow. Pray for us!

Wishing you the best of luck, OP, but it sure seems like you might be better off calling it a day and claiming a refund.

For those interested, thanks to the efforts of the team in the Concorde room yesterday (the kind man in the first wing gave us access, after our trip over from LCY), we ended up on the last flight to Barcelona, stayed 5 hours in an airport hotel and are now sat on the 8am Vueling flight to IBZ. So, hopefully well be at the hotel by the time wed have been finishing breakfast, and we still get five full evenings there. We were very close to calling it, and had agreed we wouldnt go to the airport for the third time if it had carried over to today and involved missing another day in sun/evening on holiday.
