Single passenger in booking upgraded....
So me and GF, both gold on a little hop to CPH in ET exit row 11. At the bus gate A10 my boarding pass is flagged and I'm moved to CE in 4A. However Miss DMM is in her original seat. Of course I want an easy life so she takes CE and I take 11. We'd strongly prefer to sit together, we had booked and as our status allows. Why would BA upgrade one person on the same booking to split us? Is that a standard thing? We'll both be raising complaints.

I suspect the whole complaining about an upgrade is going to get you to exactly nowhere.
but it is interesting, in my last decade as a ggl I was offered exactly one upgrade, and that would have split me on a short haul booking of 2.

At the gate, just refuse the upgrade and tell the gate agent that you prefer to stay where you are and sit together. If the situation permits, they will upgrade someone else. Of course it's always possible that your seat was unserviceable and in that case and if the flight was full there may be no other option.

It wasn't an offer. It was 'your seat has changed, that's it' if we'd had the option we would've declined. So yes we'll both be complaining

So you will complain about being upgraded and your partner will complain about not being upgraded? Thanks for giving customers relations a good laugh!
if you prefer to sit together, I suggest you ask the other row 11 passenger next to your partner if he/she would prefer to sit in Club instead, chances are they will be grateful and you wont need to complain any more..

This is not the first time I've said this and I'm going to say it again. I'm not entirely sure the OP is serious about the part about complaining. I think that part may have been in jest?

Don't forget to file in a UK261 compensation request for being shafted to CE...

there was no option to decline. It was the flight is full, that's your seat. As it happens, the flight isn't full because my original seat is empty. I know it's serviceable because I'm sitting in it. Not sure what algorithm led to BA splitting us. Yes, I will be complaining.

As others have said, no point complaining to BA about this - could have offered another passenger the upgrade if it was such an inconvenience to be apart for the 1.5hr flight, despite having the whole of weekend together.. I'm sure someone would've loved the chance to fly Business for free (perhaps for the first time).
I was split from my other half on a flight a few years back getting an upgrade at the gate on from LHR - FCO - needless to say survived and just waited for them at the top of the jetty two hours later.. certainly no complaints submitted.

Were you both booked under the same PNR or separately?
