BAEC extension

As a previous silver holder for last few years My tier point collection year just ended where i disappointingly only collected 450 points over 10 flights… however just got a BA email saying welcome to another year of silver…

anyone else have something similar or is this just BA teasing me?

Two possibilities:

BA's notoriously wobbly IT has sent you an e-mail it shouldn't have (and it wouldn't be the first time), or BA, in their magnanimity have granted you an additional year of Silver without meeting the TP requirements.

In your account, what is the expiry date of your Silver card? If it's 31st August 2023 it's probably the former. If 31st August 2024, you are very lucky

Probably worth - in order - a refresh (swipe down on the app account page), a close/re-open or even a log out and back in again - with the caveat that BA's flakey IT sometimes struggles to log people in, so I don't log out unnecessarily. Also check what ba.com reports, again after a log out/in.

It is possible that BA have extended your Silver, they do seem to extend people who fail to meet the targets sometimes, but under a completely opaque process as far as I can tell (for fairly obvious reasons)

As a July TP year end, I've just got the email myself (tho I did reach the target) an hour or so ago and I had to refresh, then exit and re-enter the app to get the update to appear.

Then it was probably sent in error. Card expiry dates update on the 10th of the month (mine updated yesterday morning) if you renewed successfully.

Quite possibly the most likely explanation, but the BA Hamster does seem to be a little tired, I only got the email (for a valid renewal) today, the 11th - and it took a fair bit of coercing the app to actually reflect that.

Not to get the OP's hopes up, but there's still a chance!

Interesting as it potentially answers the question I posed here: When are "grace" renewals announced?

Assuming your email turns out to be valid then knowing it should arrive ~10th of month gives (in the situation where it has not arrived) a week or so to find a last minute flight to top up year just ended using the 14-day grace period.

New expiry date was showing for me in app yesterday along with tier point reset, but only got email today.

Yes, as I say, I don't want to get the OP's hopes up.

However, my app didn't show the update today without a fair of "prodding", it may well have reflected it yesterday if I'd performed the same rituals (I'd forgotten tbh!).

It was when I got the email at lunchtime I went to check in the app, and it hadn't updated, even after a pulldown refresh. I had to exit the app and restart it completely to get it to reflect the new expiry date, so my suggestion is for the OP to try something similar just in case the BAEC Gods have smiled upon them.

Boringly it just worked for me in Andoid app - no in-out-swipe-it-all-about needed. But agree OP shouldn't accept first answer that they see .

If OP does retain Silver I'll put the GBP I spent on apparently unnecessary AUPs towards belief of an increased chance of getting the grace extension next year if I'm short again .

I got my renewal email today as well. But my expiry updated yesterday without any prompting.

As mentioned, mine (Android) required the incantations and runes that are all too often associated with BA's IT (but at least it displays all my upcoming bookings, so I try not prod it too much, ah how low they have driven my expectations..... )

Hopefully the OP will report back if it does update, even if only to provide data on when BA give discretionary renewals. I agree that it would be prudent to assume it's a mistake though.

Ok an update… as suggested i did multiple pull down refreshes in the app and my silver is now showing as expiring august 2024.

as a data point i have been silver for 4/5 years now and and this year got to 450 tier points in 10 ba flights. I also had a 180TP trip booked on BA then cancelled by my employer a few months ago so perhaps this was done to keep me interested!!!

I've had several "bank error in my favour" situations over the years, best not to overthink it. BA IT isn't all bad, depending on your perspective

Great outcome!

I doubt we will ever know what the criteria for discretionary renewals are except in the most general sense - like the upgrade algorithm, it is in their interests to keep the details firmly under wraps. About the only thing we can say with any certainty is that they are not doing it out of any sense of altruism or rewarding loyalty! Rather, someone, somewhere has bet that keeping you on the status treadmill will ultimately bring in more money. And they may well be right!

[And I mean no criticism by the above, this is the sort of tactic that would undoubtedly work on myself for example!]
