Risky Connection at MAN

My son needs to travel from DUB-LHR on June 30th. Unfortunately, flights are $400, so that is not an option. I booked him a ticket using Avios on EI from DUB -MAN. The flight arrives at 7:35, and he is flying HBO.

Is it possible for him to make BA 1387 from MAN-LHR at 8:40? It would be a separate business ticket, so I understand it might be too risky. We are flying to Kefalonia from LHR on July 1st. I hoped BA would release some Avios tickets, but that doesnt seem to be the case.

Is taking the train a better option? If he takes the train, is buying the ticket in advance necessary? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Very tight given that a terminal change in MAN would be needed - EI short-haul will arrive in T1 and BA will depart from T3.

I think an off-peak single on the train would be simpler. No need to book in advance for that ticket, cost should be about 70, and he can just head to Piccadilly after arriving in MAN. Off peak restrictions randomly don't apply on Fridays, so he can just get the first train.

I wouldn't trust any connection at MAN of that length and would tend to avoid it at all. If it's an EI flight he might need to go through security again and even MAN fast track is a very inefficient. The train may be more reliable.

I know that some Loganair domestic flights offload you directly into the departure gate area at MAN but I am not 100% sure if that is the case with EI (since it is in the CTA)

Don't forget LCY and a nice easy Lizzie Line transfer.

Others may disagree, but for me thats absolutely too risky.
2 separate tickets, a change of terminal and clearing security at MAN of all the places, within 1:05 would be a big red flag for me.

About the train, if he wants to take a train from MAN to London he needs to get Piccadilly first then change onto the Avanti service to Euston. advance tickets are generally cheaper but they are restricted to the train booked so make sure you leave enough time.

if your son is not in a rush on the 30th, do the rail and sail ticket for just over 50
fast ferry to Holyhead then the train to Euston, can be booked via the trainline etc.

if he insists on flying see what other London Airports price up to

How about flying to BHX and then a shorter Avanti service from Birmingham International or National Express Coach?

As noted this will involve exiting T1 on arrival (no immigration as least), going landside across to T3, through security at a busy time of day, and to the gate. Clearly not possible if there are checked bags. If HBO it may just work if everything is on time, but there is a very significant (>50%) chance of failure. Just a 10 minute or more delay on arrival then it would make it impossible.

This is not a risky itinerary. Its impossible! Let me explain why

1) Arrivals from ROI are treated separately to arrivals from the UK or other countries. If arriving on EI that almost always means arrivals are bussed to the arrivals hall. A quick escape from seats close to the front is therefore not possible.
2) MAN is not sent up for connections, there are no connections channels. Your son will have to leave T1 departures and re-clear T3 security.
3) There is no indoor or well signed route from T1 to T3. It will be difficult to do quickly and easy to get wrong.
4) Security in MAN is unpleasant. It is often extremely slow, with many secondary searches. The attitude is aggressive an no sympathy will be shown for those who are late.
5) T3 Fast Track is shared with PRM and families. Therefore it can be extremely slow.
6) Boarding will commence about 30 minutes before departure and the gate will close at T-20.
7) MAN is extremely prone to delays, both on the airfield and security. 90+ minute security queues are not unusual in the summer and were almost the norm last summer.

I would seriously consider road or rail. Either hire a car on a one-way rental, take the train or hop on a coach. MAN has a large coach station well served by National Express and many trains. If you can’t get a longer stop-over of at least three hours I would not even consider MAN.

I'm not sure if T1-T3 connections are about to re-open. There's a sign on the doors between the terminals (past gate 37 / 36?, and near the T1 lounges) that says staff aren't allowed to use those doors any more from the 27th June at 12pm.

There's also the 7.40pm U2 BHD > LTN that shows at 87 (HBO) on Google Flights: https://www.google.com/travel/flight...QpLe5HDmiVtYT6. The ~2:30 trip to BHD from Dublin city centre by train makes it look like a possibly viable option!

As others have said, forget it. Even with everything on time, I'd suggest the chances of making the connection are close to zero.

Find another route or jump on a train. Probably be quicker to do Manchester Airport to Wilmslow and then a direct train to London from there albeit less frequent than going into Piccadilly.

second! MAN is the only airport I have encountered within last few years that appears to measure the size and clarity of ones bag for liquids.

I got shouted at T3 security when I told them I didn't have long til boarding: "Why did you get here so late?"

Only after I explained I'd been queuing at the BA check in for over an hour and many passengers behind me were in the same predicament, did they show some (very limited) sympathy and let us through whilst "politely" reminding me that it wasn't securities fault that BA were slow. I politely reminded her it wasn't mine either.

If there was one airport in the world I'd avoid any sort of connection, it's sadly my home airport, Manchester. In reality, things have got better, especially if flying T2, but id still avoid it if I had the choice!
