BA525 FLR-LHR 16 Apr

Anyone know what happened with BA525 today? I think this is the first day of the route and it seems to have stopped off in Pisa on the way from Florence to London, which is odd as the flight into Florence (524) looks to have arrived more or less on time and it’s normally landing into Florence that is the issue not departing.

Thanks in advance!

I heard it was to take on fuel, as it was payload restricted on departure. That must be a very short flight! I see on another thread that it also left passengers behind. I presume BA are banking on not having to do this every time, and there was something with the conditions today that made this necessary?

I seem to recall many a pessimistic prediction over operational complexity and disruption on this route in the thread where it was first announced to be starting.

Indeed, this is exactly the kind of operational problem that was predicted https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/34886172-post42.html

However, I am sure BA will pay any compensation claimed and not suggest it was weather related

If a load of non aviation professionals on an Internet forum can predict that scheduling an A320 was a bad idea due to the known airport constraints (short one directional runway and normal wind and heat issues) there is no way BA can claim extraordinary circumstances due to normal weather in good faith. Vueling flies an A319 FLR-LGW and CityFlyer an E190 so they have a lot of knowledge within the group about what conditions to expect and associated operating constraints.

BA 32N performance issues in and out of FLR

………..oh………….

I refer to my comments on the previous thread, that said only we are only on day one and not the best weather admittedly so let’s not write it off just yet. This is however an indicator of what to be prepared for if booked on the route.
It may even be worse than my ‘back of a fag packet’ calcs.

Would it help to send an A319 instead? IIRC that is what Vueling normally use

Yes, certainly something smaller. But they probably want to squeeze in as many farepaying pax as possible.😬.

How about an Embraer 😂

Offloads and diversions have happened on Embraers as well.

I’ve seen lots of offloads from FLR on Embraers, due to reduced performance from either tailwinds or heat, but never offloads plus a diversion to Pisa for fuel - have I just been lucky so far?

Edited to add - also lots of diversions to PSA in winter due to fog, generally resulting in bussing to PSA for the London bound passengers, but that’s a slightly different issue

I think it happened when I booked a Hotline ticket to a friend of mine’s parents to attend this guy’s wedding.

Bottom line, FLR is tricky. Sooner or later some changes will be required there but the local NIMBYs are very active.

Day 2 - outbound will be diverting to Pisa. At check in 2 hours before departure time in FLR they are are already bussing passengers to Pisa.

Presumably the same situation as yesterday and to avoid having to another stop in Pisa on return? Or is the weather also degrading performance so as to impact on arrival ops?

Not a great start
