Yes and no. There is a flight number allocation matrix, all rather historical and now some what jumbled up after the pandemic with some old LGW assigned numbers operating out of LHR etc. but the 9xxx series are generally reserved for anything non scheduled including charters etc.

I just had a look at the cancelled LAX thread.
It seems clear that a lack of crew would be cause for EC261. I’ll submit a claim and see what the response is.
Just so I have all my info correct for when I claim:
109 was cancelled on the 17th due to lack of full crew.
My plane then took stranded pax from the cancelled 108 that was caused by 109’s cancellation.
I understand about crew rest after bringing the empty plane over.
Do I have that basically correct?

Yes, the crew that should have flown you back today never left LHR on the 17th due to a shortage, a newly constituted crew has flown the empty aircraft out and they will now operate your delayed 108 today.

I thought it initially surprising that the commercial decision is made to sacrifice a LAX against a DXB but looking at the ticket prices in Y over the next two months, I am confident that the times of £360 returns to DXB are over

I have to say Sigwx (and also others) your knowledge and input is extremely insightful and makes an otherwise blanket request for EU261 which BA may initially otherwise deny more watertight as all the facts can be included. This has always been my experience of 261.... once presented with clear specific facts (despite not actually bring required), it just makes the process easier for the claimant and for the airline to just approve without it going to CEDR.

If you remember that BA and AA share a joint business across the Atlantic, it’s not surprising at all. There are many permutations of rerouting that are available from LAX, but very few from DXB if the subsequent BA flights are busy. QR is an option, but means revenue leakage that wouldn’t be the case with AA, and may also be full in any case. EK is no-go as they don’t have any kind of interline agreement.
