The lavatories don’t use potable water. Lavatories ending up “in a horrific state” is because the users made a mess not the lack of potable water.

I imagine that for a long sector like HKG having no water would be a serious health and safety issue.

I guess this is all related to lack of ground operation staff. This is affecting operating jet bridges, pushback trucks, busses, water replenishment. I am afraid summer operations will go into a meltdown.

Our Tenerife flights had similar issues both ways in February. Outbound, lavatories failed on the ground and could not be repaired. Engineering told the captain that they would work above 16000 feet only to discover, unsurprisingly, that they did not.
The return flight ran out of water at about the half way mark.

The usual reason why there is no water for the taps is not a lack of potable water, there is hardly ever a lack of water. The usual reason is a failure of the drain mast heater, water from the sinks (not the toilet) is vented to atmosphere via a drain. It gets very cold aloft and so the last thing you want is that water to freeze before venting, not just because of the blockage issue but also water freezing expands and will break pipes etc if allowed to do so. So if a drain mast heater fails, then the sinks cannot be used for water disposal. This is not ideal but antibacterial wipes and gels will keep things sanitary. The water will be turned off to the sinks and to the galley brewers, so no hot drinks. It might only be one part of the aircraft with a problem so you may still get hot drinks brewed in a different galley, but still have the wipes etc. Crew may not use the sinks for liquid disposal on the ground, as it vents overboard, and is BLOODY irritating when it’s done as you do a walk round pre flight. Coming in coated in tea, or something else liquid from the sinks because someone forgot is horrible and can lead to frosty glances down the cabin.

Skirting around the ‘wisecrack’ posts, which flight was this ? Curious to learn the flight length and whether the aircraft left from a BA base or an outstation.
