Dec 2022 Changes to British Airways taxes and fees on redemptions

Introduction of Reward Flight Saver on longhaul services

This was announced by British Airways on 7th December 2022. The full announcement can be found here:

https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb...d-flight-saver

and there is a section on that page that covers frequently asked questions.

Extension of 2-4-1 coupons for use on Iberia and Aer Lingus

It is now possible to use American Express 2-4-1 coupons on these two additional airlines. It is yet to be confirmed whether this extension also applies to Chase Travel Together coupons.Update: it is not going to apply to the Chase Travel Together ticket.

Big drop in taxes (RFS now on Longhaul Club)

Just tried to book a Club reward ticket to Johannesburg and the taxes have come down dramatically to £450.

On digging a bit more, have found that LA is £350, New York £350, Singapore £600.

So BA now have Reward Flight Saver on longhaul.

A big positive move in my opinion.

Have to say this is something I didn’t expect to see.

A great, genuine improvement by BA in my opinion.

Yes it appears so. Not sure whether the figures from GSOP are peak or off peak btw.

Ok, well that's even worse then!

Effectively there is no reduction in TFC as such, they are just allowing you to reduce TFC by paying more avios then you used to.

A certain blog seems to have drunk the koolaid on this (and selling a CC as somehow this is a great thing), this only seems to be better if you are Avios rich and cash poor and not a better value.

Is BA still using the standard redemption rate and taxes if you use a 241 voucher?

I believe with the new 241s you were not restricted only to the old band rates.

For a new 241 now for NYC rtn in J off peak I see (TFC figure is for 2 people):

160000 Avios + £ 700.00
130000 Avios + £ 1,280.00
100000 Avios + £ 1,700.00 (old avios band rate)
88000 Avios + £ 2,480.00
64000 Avios + £ 2,960.00
50000 Avios + £ 3,580.00
