South lounge escalators out of action
Just a quick heads up, the escalators are FUBAR and have been since about 0630. Everyone going up and coming down is having to use the 1 operating lift and there is a big queue. Lift man is here working on lift 2 .

They have just opened the stairs behind the lifts too.
Was there something else going on as well? I couldnt work out why they wouldnt just allow the escalators to be used even if not moving?

Current queue for the south lounges. Only way to enter is via the one working lift, can exit the first lounge at least via the emergency stairway- they wont let you enter that way.

It’s been like that since 6:00pm yesterday. We used the right hand lift on which the doors jammed when we tried to get out. The lift engineer was working on it as we left lounge around 8.
Pretty poor show if HAL can’t get either escalators or a lift back in service 18 hours later.

An older couple, anxious to get to their gate, did dip under the barrier and walk down despite being told not to do so. It was dangerous, apparently - the escalator might start up. Words were exchanged and subsequenly an escalator dragon was posted to deter like-minded customers.

I used the fire escape stairs to exit yesterday afternoon, only one lift was in action. The member of staff guarding the bottom of the stairs said it wasn't likely to be sorted before next week.

Agree, stopped escalators are just stairs, but when I asked I was told the steps are too far apart to be used as stairs.. Unless the escalator is running, then it's ok if you want to use them as stairs while they're moving. Perplexes me.

Of course if the repairs involve them being taken apart then it is understandable they are not in condition to be used at all.

I got a reasonably cogent explanation from a technically minded duty manager, hinging on the step dimensions and visual cues making the escalators awkward and therefore potentially dangerous for static use. Escalator steps are higher than those of a staircase (allowing a steeper, more space efficient staircase), and deeper (allowing users to stand comfortably) coupled with the slatted design of the step surface that our brains are conditioned to interpret as a moving surface.
The hotel's rule book was that static escalators had to be closed off, I suppose on the insistence of their insurers.
I've had years to experience the effects of the confusing visual cue, witnessing the occasional stumble as strangers to Manchester airport's approach to maintaining its facilities step onto the (static) travelators on the elevated walkways between station and terminals.
