Questionable connection time, can I buy two tickets?

I am traveling hbo in F from LAX- SFO-LHR on BA 286 which arrives at 13:55. On a separate ticket, I will be connecting to FCO. I have the option of BA554 at 15:40 or BA558 at 19:05. I have a long layover in SFO, so I am afraid that another 5-hour layover at LHR will be painful. It looks like BA286 usually arrives on time.

Am I allowed to buy tickets on both flights, and then cancel the second one for a FTV if I make the earlier flight? If I don’t make the first flight, it could be very expensive to buy a last-minute ticket. On Monday, BA558 is $855 in economy.

If you buy directly from BA, then you are allowed to buy yourself a ticket on each of two different flights on the same day. AIUI, if both bookings are ticketed (which usually happens instantly during the booking process if you buy directly) then BA will not cancel either reservation for being a duplicate. Other airlines have different rules, but this should be fine on BA.

Whether you will be able to cancel for an FTV (or eVoucher) depends on whether the Book With Confidence policy applies to your bookings. In part, that depends on your travel date. Check this thread: Book with confidence policy - or ba.com.

Buy a plus fare for the second flight and if, when you land, there is at least 1 hour before checkin for the earlier flight closes, use the free change on the day to move the flight forward.

Are you still allowed to move a flight forward on a plus fare? It is not listed as a benefit, so I thought that it may have been removed.

How do you mean? As in get an earlier flight on the same route and on the same day? Yes that is still a benefit of a plus fare.

Free change on the day for a plus fare allows one to move your flight forward or back provided you do so at least one hour before your scheduled departure.

Thanks for all your input. BA canceled the earlier flight. so now I do not have to worry about it.
