25 Feb : Russia closes airspace to British aircraft, BA flights affected.

According to RT and confirmed by BBC Monitoring, the Russian Federation has restricted access to its airspace to all aircraft “owned, leased, or operated by any person connected with Britain or registered in Britain.”

The ban came into effect at 0800GMT on Friday 25 February.

Presumably will affect Tokyo flights too.

I don’t think Ba have resumed Beijing or Seoul yet have they? Colleagues had to fly hai paris to get to China last month.

Good. Surprised BA hadn't stopped flights already.

Where does this leave routing to HKG and SIN?

If more EU based airlines follow suit then we could see some very interesting things happening with routing!

BA5/6 seems to be cancelled for the foreseeable. Guessing enough capacity on the JAL flights for the time being.

No direct flights at all between China (PEK and PVG) and the UK since Dec 2000 (banned by the Chinese authorities). There was at some point talk (or maybe just a wishful rumour ..) of restarting the Shanghai route on a trial period basis around now, but I last I heard that has been pushed back until at least summer.

That's untrue. I did direct flights in 2010 to PVG and again to PKG in 2012.

Dec 2000 clearly a typo

SIN flights usually route south over Turkey and the southern Black Sea, then via the Middle East and India

not a natural one, I get fat fingers sometimes and it is neighbouring numbers that get hit. 1 and 2 are nowhere near 0.

Unless if you use the numpad ;)

The ‘pan handle’ route in days of old gets re-enacted. Standby for great views of the Himalayas.

Clearly - thanks for the sane response ...

Would like to confess that this was the reason, but honesty prevails and can only say that it was just an unexplained malfunction.

I have to say though that although there have been no direct flights between the UK and China since Dec 2020 (and none to PEK where I live since Jan 2020) it feels like it was since 2000!
