G-GATJ made an appearance on a couple of LHR sectors over the past day or two. Started in MAN, then came to LHR and done a GVA/MXP rotation and is in GLA tonight and is due back to LGW in the morning. Is LHR short of SH aircraft?

This one is interesting as it seems EUYP did the MAN-LGW sector then GATJ took over to go back to MAN, meaning UYP ended up operating other LGW services and ATJ LHR services. I presume UYP went tech at LGW and ATJ was the aircraft swap. Looks like both will be swapped back today via the Glasgow trip.

Wednesday Updates:

Lots of shuffling around at the moment

1) G-EUYV is at LGW and will be for the next few days servicing flights
2) G-GATN is at LHR and will be for the next few days servicing flights
3) G-ZBKL headed down to CWL this afternoon, but with nothing filed to fly back, I'm surprised to see CWL now has 7 aircraft in residence, any insight into what the maximum number it can handle ?
4) Dublin seems to taking some B789 aircraft for maintenance (G-ZBKP was there for 6 days, so I'm not sure if its for painting or just servicing) and G-ZBKN has now taken its place
5) Madrid is taking B788's for 2 or 3 days as well, G-ZBJG was there for a few days and has now been swapped out for G-ZBJI - any insight welcome
6) Some movement of B772's between LHR and LGW - but until ISB and DOH end it seems LGW needs 11 long-haul aircraft to service their requirements which sees LHR tight on B772 aircraft (perhaps the reason for lots of shuffling between A350's and B772's !)

Thanks for that, Wiki updated. If anybody has any insight into what G-LCYV has been doing recently as it did a huge amount of Jersey - Isle of Man - Palma flights on Saturday and hasn't flown since (seems to still be in Palma)

Today I was thinking that BA may have made a huge mistake by pulling the plug on the 747's earlier than planned and sending them off to the grave yard
now before you all jump at me at once let me explain
True covid messed up a lot of plans, it did so for everyone,
however by pulling these from service it almost was like a short term solution to a long term problem
BA is short on planes and thats a fact. And even Boeing can't deliver the 789's who knows when that will end with everything just getting pushed off and pushed off we have to make due with what we have

And that means every thing is even more messed up
By constantly swapping planes, brining them here to there
It looks to me they created a bigger probelm with that short term solution

Other opinions welcome
It's just my humble opinion

I believe CWL can handle 5 in total. 3 in the main hangar and two in nose in facilities.

DUB may well be wing paint related and MAD has the largest power plant cell in the IAG empire so may well be related to the ‘suck-squeeze-bang-blow’ dept.

BA was in the position of having to predict what was likely to happen. It was staring potential bankruptcy in the face. IIRC, some of its peer group were at least arguably being helped more generously by "their" governments than BA was. Keeping the 747s airworthy would not have been a cost-free exercise: it's not like just storing an old car in the garage for a few months until the winter is past. And as a wise man once said: predictions are very difficult, particularly about the future.

If BA could have known what was ultimately going to happen, both to demand and to fleet replacement plans, there might well still be some 747s in service now. I would have loved that. BA may well have taken a different approach to staff numbers too. But hindsight is always 20/20.

Agree for the most part
and apology if my point didn't come across well

My point is simple
"Keep the planes for a while, aka don't kill it, test the waters see what's happening with demand etc.
and then worst comes to worst you dump them
Not just go straight for the kill which is essentially what they've done" manily because if its fair to say that " all other airlines have done it too so BA probably thought yeah let's just do that then cuz everyone else is doing that "

I may be wrong
But given the circumstances now I definitely think I have a point 🤪

IIRC, the plan before covid had the 747s being retired in line with the arrival of A35Ks and additional 77Ws into the fleet. The 781s were intended for expansion. Aside from staffing issues, I think some of the 'constant swapping' is to eek out as much flying as possible whilst pushing back major maintenance costs.

the plan was to fade out the planes by the end of 2024

I think you may be underestimating just how much money it would have cost to "keep the planes for a while". The maintenance costs of an idle fleet are still pretty substantial.

MIDX is now on a LHR-LIS-LHR rotation, having already flown some UK internal sectors. This must mean that the maintenance team are satisfied that it has come out of storage satisfactorily.

Is it likely to move to LGW shortly or will it remain at LHR?

It is currently scheduled for LHR service at least up to Saturday (including a night stop at Edinburgh on Friday) so it isn’t going to LGW soon, but given the majority of the G-Mxxx fleet are there along with the G-GATx series, I would expect it to transfer over eventually once it has passed the LHR maintenance sniff test.

4-Class G-VIIY covering the 2033 to Doha today. (Looked at expert flyer seat map and interestingly, about 8 pax "Flubbed" with a near empty Club cabin, an empty Prem cabin but a fairly full (not blocked) Eco cabin.

G-VIIO seems to have got stranded in BGI on the way back from UVF, so expect the swap above was an emergency stand in.
