Was pleasantly surprised to be offered an 'off-menu' special at lunch today. Duck Leg with Asian Slaw. Very nice it was too. Is it a one off or the start of a welcome new trend?? Are the powers at be listening to feedback on this thread?

As an aside, I tried the Chateau Cantemerle 2014. Perhaps I was unlucky with the bottle but I thought it was well past its prime and borderline dreadful. Shame for what is meant to be the flagship red. The longstanding Paul Elgin Pinot seems to have been (temporarily?) replaced by an Akarua RUA from Otago in NZ. Forgot to check the vintage. This was decent but nothing more. I heartily agree with those who think the wine list is very pedestrian right now, as opposed to days of old, with (IMHO) the only exceptions being (no surprise) the LPGS... and the Port

It’s more likely that the Cantemerle is too young, rather than past it’s prime. It typically needs ten years++ or giving it a lot of air (as in many hours in a decanter) when it’s that young. Of course it could have been an off bottle too but more likely it was just too tightly wound (young).

I’ll be happy to give it a go next week in the interests of public service

Great news on the off menu duck leg, and indeed, let's hope this will become a trend.

On the Cantemerle, I fully agree with you here. You'd expect this wine and vintage to peak in the early 2030s so past its peak in terms of maturity is not really likely. That said, apart from youth, I suspect that contrails7 is right that (s)he may have just been unlucky with the bottle, or that it might have been opened earlier (surprisingly enough, not that many people in the CCR seem to drink wine so it is not unusual to be served from a bottle opened the day before) or simply that it may not have been kept in ideal conditions.

When I had it last week, I was lucky enough to get a new bottle as they had no open one and it was excellent indeed, but an element of Russian roulette is not out of the question!

The vintage of Ch. Cantemerle was 2012 in the CCR last night.

In other news.. great to be back in the CCR. Bar servers were lovely. Very quiet at 6pm. BA Burger appears to have been ‘enhanced’ .. very thin beef patty compared to the original chunky patty. Other than that everything else was very good!

Oh and I had the plant burger last week just to try it. Not too bad, the chips were a little over cooked unfortunately, but I may actually have it again sometime!

First time back for us since March 2020 yesterday and today.

I wasn't sure about the plant burger as the one just before covid was horrible.

But really enjoyed the new one.

Highly recommend it.

Maybe I’m just hard to please, but that burger (and the chips) look awful to me. Either the bun is too big, or the burger too small, and it looks very dry…

Any anecdotal history of the kitchen doing non breakfast items on request? (for say around 10am, when I will have already eaten breakfast elsewhere at 6.30am that morning)

And I would add, it was absolutely great being back in the CCR.

It has a charm that grows on you... Who knows why, but it does...

Trust me it's tastier than it looks. We are veggies, yup crazy guys, but it's like an impossible burger, not as good though.

There's a lot of bread and the relish is a bit strong.. but I still enjoyed it.

Loved the smoked salmon dish and the soup was good too.

Can't fault anything really, but there again just happy to be back.

I can believe that it is tastier than it looks, as any other conclusion would mean it was truly dire. I don't mind a veggie anything, but they should be able to do a bit better on presentation here.

Crikey, you're easily pleased! That looks grim.

If I'd been served that up at a roadside caff I'd be sending it back..

Chips look like they've been reheated half a dozen times, and the bun looks dry as a bone.
