I am not sure I understand? When booking an off peak one way in Y from Scotland to London, how is 4K miles and $39.50 on iberia cheaper than 4750 avios and £17.50?

For reference here are all the rates after selecting your flight and clicking to the quote page - the £17.50 rate corresponding to the old band rate.

9250 Avios + £ 0.50
8500 Avios + £ 4.50
7250 Avios + £ 9.00
4750 Avios + £ 17.50
3700 Avios + £ 32.50
2950 Avios + £ 42.50

The Iberia pricing would be cheaper if you were not eligible for RFS pricing.

ah ok. I wasn’t sure whether that was a factor for the OP. In that case taxes/fees/charges would be £25.79 (using GLA-LHR as an example).

So if the OP doesn’t qualify for RFS it would be
4750 avios & £25.79 booked via BA
4000 mile & $39.50 booked on iberia

saving 750 miles but cash element is £3 more.

Yes, but the Iberia pricing only relates to flights operated by Iberia. If you purchase a BA flight with IB Plus points you will pay the Executive Club rate

That is incorrect. £25.79 is what you would pay with with 9250 avios in the new system. At 4750 avios, the cash element would be £45.79. That is what makes using maximum avios as the new base for calculation of the cash component so spectacularly more expensive for non-RFS redemptions.

Ah ok. Apologies for my mistake. So a good reason to earn at least one avios every year then if that is the case for the OP.

if OP does not qualify for RFS, they would be charged 9250 + £25.79, quite a steep increase.

Whatever BA EC is doing with this RFS is a total mess. Not only on short haul, but also long haul.

As an example, you want to book from Tokyo to London (off-peak)?
-BAEC on BA: 35.000 WT or 39.000 WTP + £25
-BAEC on JAL: 31.000 + £26 in economy or 62.000 Avios in premium economy + £26

Now, if you book the exactly same BA flight via IBPLUS in WT: 19.500 Avios + £25 or WTP 39.000 Avios + £25

Essentially, for being loyal to BAEC, you are being penalised by 15.500 Avios for flying BA (in economy).

With the whole RFS system, they've lost the plot.
