Companion voucher booking in September

I have club world flights booked in September using my Avios and a companion voucher. I know that there is a lot of uncertainty but am considering the scenario that one of us will be able to travel and the other not. If we simply kept the booking as it is but one didn’t travel, would it be just that persons return ticket that would be cancelled or would both be cancelled?

The companion voucher would expire before we would be able to use it, so I was wondering if leaving the booking as it is would be the simplest thing to do as if I cancelled the whole booking I am concerned that I might not be able to rebook for one and the cash price is quite expensive at the moment.

I'd recommend cancelling and taking back everything less the £35 per person charge. If you convert to a Future Travel Voucher this would be held until April 2023 both the fees paid, the voucher and the Avios. So a very long extension. Downside is it appears to be the same two who have to travel again. Loads more details and experiences on:

Thank you for your reply, I will have a proper read of your links shortly.

Can I just check my understanding on your reply in the meantime. So I could either get my points, voucher and taxes refunded to me less the admin fee OR I could request a future travel voucher, in which case my companion voucher is effectively extended until April 2023 but BA will hang onto my Avios and not refund my taxes? If we are not going to use the booked flight in September I would quite like the taxes back as it would pay towards the solo flight if one of us goes ahead.

Yes correct - all £1200+ will be held by BA. I'd cancel and take the £35 hit during these times - your 241 will be extended automatically to 2022 by now

Thank you for your comment again, I think we have decided on the way to go which will be to cancel for £75 and rebook for cash for a solo ticket - should one be able to go of course.

And there is currently an unanswered (for me, at any rate) question about whether getting a FTV locks in the identity of your companion for when you come to rebook. This may matter little to many people, but it might clearly matter more to some.

On a FTV it would be same passengers that travel thats the way it works on commercial bookings. Its only possible to change passenger where it is evoucher. Some bookings arent eligible for evouchers which unfortunately includes Avios bookings. I havent seen anything to suggest its any different for Avios/companion voucher bookings.

Thanks - that's really helpful and makes perfect sense.
