Newbie to companion voucher

I have a normal BA Amex card and will likely hit the required amount (which I need to hit by early Jan) to get a companion voucher over the next couple of weeks or so.

I have never had one before so am wondering if anyone can give me any general tips and tricks, some wisdom etc, about how the voucher both works as well as how to maximise the value/use of it.

Thank you.

Have a read of the excellent wiki in the guide here which should help you a lot with most questions. If you have any specific queries then do feel free to ask in the thread.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such good availability of reward flights long haul..... for obvious reasons! Where and when were you hoping to go?

Open minded and Easter would be tempting but I'm not sure how quarantine would look by then and I only have two weeks, so it's a gamble!

By normal do you mean the free card ? If so look at upgrading your card to the British airways premium plus card you will get extra year validity on voucher ie 2 years not 1 but you MUST upgrade before you hit the 10k spend.

I wouldn't bother with this, you will automatically get 18 months now on the freebie, and you can extend to spring 2022 using the book and convert to FTV

Not sure about that - wouldn't the FTV require the complete trip to be complete by Apr 22 whereas an 18 month voucher would potentially expire in May 22, with only the outbound to be flown by then. A BAPP voucher would be even better with a potential May 23 expiry.

Should that say 'must upgrade before you hit the 20k spend'?

Oh - will I get 18 months rather than 12 if I qualify soon?

According to the app, I qualified a week ago...but never got an email saying I did and have heard nothing. What is meant to happen now?

Are they still giving 6 month extra on newly issued vouchers? Just about to trigger one with my BAPP, should I expect 30 months then?

Thanks for the data point. Should trigger a new companion voucher today, so hopefully will be valid to May 2023.
Now just need a further extension to existing vouchers now! Next one expires in June 2021 and not convinced the Easter LAX trip it's currently being used for will be going ahead.

If you return the June 2021 one to a Future Travel Voucher it will be valid until Apr 2022
