Removal of Boarding Music

I heard that BA have stopped paying for the licensing fees on the traditional boarding music. Can anyone confirm is this is true or just a rumour?

If it turns out to be true, it really shows that BA are exploring every possible avenue to reduce costs.

DvořŠk Serenade for Strings usually (if the crew remember to switch it on).

They did have the music going on at least one of my flights last week, EDI-LHR I think. I must admit I don't always notice it but I recall this one since it was sufficiently loud to bring a mobile call behind me to a swift end. I'd agree this is one cost saving which perhaps won't give an outing for the deoxyribonucleic acid posters.

If licensing is the reason, are they going to replace it with Kevin MacLeod's stock music?

Wasn't playing on last Wednesday's LHR-IAD... and since we had a manual safety briefing (as per my last 4 TATL flights), maybe they've stopped paying royalties on that too!

I don’t think it’s true. They’ve been very open in the past that they didn’t want to change it precisely because it would mean they had to start paying royalties, so (a) it’s unlikely they’re paying now, and (b) perhaps it’s the stories getting mixed up.

I thought BA had its own orchestra? Surely they could just record them playing something and then there would be no royalties?

Worth noting that on aircraft equipped with Panasonic and Rockwell Collins IFE, boarding music is not played because it prevents gate to gate entertainment from working. There have been no comms out to say not to play boarding music on other aircraft.

Flew DUB-LHR yesterday and there was no music. Not that I notice it must times, but this time it was remarkably quiet in the cabin.

Iíve had it consistently played on all of my flights in last 2 weeks - including Citiflyer which surprised me as I donít ever remember noticing before on LCY.
