Is theoretical seating still in operation?

We are currently sat in 12k, 13j and 13k. 12j is "blocked" on expert flyer and to my mother in law on a different booking. However we dont see the seat as being blocked seat on our booking, i assume this is theoretical seating blocking the seat next to a silver member?
Interesting the front half of economy is blocked out, i assume this is to balance out the plane.

That's exactly how TS works, it relies on any other Silver member knowing that rather than swiping that seat. More details in the main TS thread.

We are both silver, we booked an A and a C last but 1 row in Economy. When we checked in the agent noticed what we had done and said he would double-check if the seat between us was blocked, and if not he would block it, but he confirmed the system had definitely blocked it because we were silver and nobody would be sitting there.
I never really understand why people have this obsession with sitting at the front of economy when the back is always quieter. Especially now that they board the back first, you are guaranteed space to store your luggage. And disembarking is now much easier as they do it in rows.

I was thinking of moving into that blocked seat at T-24 and then i would be able to move my mother-in-law into the seat i freed up, and we can therefore all sit together.
EDIT - i think i answered my own question, it looks like i can selected seats that are blocked for others, therefore others can do the same.

if you move to the seat beside you then the seat you freed up will be blocked so your mother on a separate booking will not see it as available.
you as gold can select seats that others cannot select. depending on status, pax see different availability on the seat maps.

The seat next to you gets blocked, for sure for everyone with a lower status.
There is some discussion around people with the same status as even CWS has posted seat maps which showed seats he could not select.
Now I say status as this is not a gold benefit, seats blocks work for other status too.
At some point the seats that are not blocked run out, so the system needs to "free up" some seats. it will do that based primarily on lowest status, so your "gold" blocks would survive longer than my "silver" block.

Less impact from turbulence is one reason, but most importantly the ability to get to the front of the queue at immigration (assuming they don't bus you of course).

Isn't is also the case that around 72 hours before a flight there is some human intervention and some seats are then blocked in a harder way so that nobody can reserve them? And this is the time when people could get upgraded or moved around? I remember being told this was how it happened but I must admit it was years and years ago.
