Ttravel to Italy

We've just been emailed about the Italy regulations regarding hand luggage being able to fit under the seat in front of you and not placed into overhead lockers. Fair enough but we are in exit row seats. So what happens to our hand luggage then with these competing regulations? I'm not trusting an expensive camera to be hold baggage.

Slightly off topic but a friend is on a flight to Perugia this morning and Ryanair seem to be ignoring the no use of overhead lockers part of the decree - presumably it doesn't suit their turnaround times. Whilst it is a ridiculous rule, it does make one wonder what other rules Ryanair chooses to ignore.

BTW, the new ministerial decree is supposed to be getting rid of that rule.

Also out of Italy. To be clear, check-in agents will still insist that full sized carry on bags go in the hold (like for all other passengers). However, once onboard the smaller bags can go in the overhead lockers.

Thankfully the Italian ban for use of overhead bins is no longer in force as of today, July 15th. Not sure if it will take airlines a few days to adapt and go back to normal; maybe anyone who’s flying to/from Italy today can report back.

Interestingly, the new Italian regulations still contain some awkward non-standard provisions... For example, airlines are now required to provide plastic bags for passengers to store their overcoats (or any other item of clothing) before they go into the overhead bins.

Am travelling from Italy to Heathrow tomorrow so will report back on any peculiarities. OLCI does not seem to work and when you get to the end where it asks how you want your BP (collect at airport / print / on smartphone etc) it all stops and a warning message flashes up stating something like "OLCI is not possible because travel to certain countries require a full Passport and Document Check at the airport"

So any idea what this is about?

Yes, this is in line with what the procedures have been so far. Italy flights require a temperature check (and presumably BA still wants you to check the hand baggage if they haven't caught up with the suspension of that particular regulation). Hence, no mobile boarding pass to force passengers to go through normal check-in (although the message about passport/visa check is a standard one used for all flights requiring a manual document check). Interestingly, I've noticed that for transit passengers the temperature check is done at the gate (a bunch of people were called to the podium).

Oddly enough, you can go in to the App after trying to check in online and get your BP. This does not negate the need for a temperature check as the check-in person needs to note on the system this has been done. You also need your declaration and these are collected at the gate (at least for BLQ) and not at the Italian airport.

Yes I guess so. Although at LHR on the outbound to Italy 2 weeks ago OLCI was fully possible and any hand-baggage that was not compliant was simply rounded up at the gate, as were the completed locator forms.

For Italy a temperature check and passenger declaration on leaving the uk and also departing Italy. We used the first wing and got our temperature checked on entry. For us last weekend the luggage rules were in place, no hand luggage in the overhead lockers except for us. Not a DYKWIA moment; we were in exit row seats and so safety considerations overrode the italian regulations...

I suspect that over the last 2 weeks the app has been updated to correctly reflect the doc check requirement. I think your anomaly was being able to OCLI a couple weeks ago.
