Just received cancellation emails for 2 sets of flights in August to Italy (outbound and inbounds) which has surprised me so clearly not all staff will be back to work!

This does seem really odd because today it has been announced that Italy <>UK travel is highly likely to be exempted from the 14-day rule on returning - this is what BA (and other airlines) have been continually stating is the prime reason why they cannot return to having some form of normality this summer. Repeatedly cancelling flights some 2+ months out as many have posted seems very counterproductive to getting people to travel. How on earth do any airlines know what demand will be 2+ months out from now with the situation, rules changing daily?

Doing this hardly inspires people to book with any sort of confidence, particularly if you add in the well publicised negative press on BA (and others) making it extremely difficult to get a quick cash refund when they cancel a flight. Who would want to book anything at the moment?

Plus presumably it also delays the number of BA staff (particularly CC) returning to work as this is proportional to the number of flights running.

They are not going to be nightstopping crew in Europe for a considerable length of time, so those flights where the crew get off and nightstop and another crew takes the flight back, either straight away or the following morning, are likely to be cancelled, leaving the operating sectors being the ones already operated as a there and back service with the one crew.

This may be the reason for certain flights to be cancelled plus consolidations of flights will take place when there is less demand. Neither business travel or leisure travel will be back to the previous levels for a long time to come. So I would expect you to see many flight cancellations even those we start to operate some flights.

Why are people surprised flights are being cancelled months ahead? Its going to take YEARS before BA needs 5/6 flights a day to most destinations. A quarter of the workforce is going, flights already operate on minimum crew, why are people expecting anything near a full schedule.

Likewise surprised at the level of surprise re. flight cancellations.

Did people really expect BA to run a full Aug service???

OH has been furloughed until end of July. In case it's of interest.

BA have unveiled a ‘soft landing’ for EF and WW crew.

Basically it is 80% of your current basic salary until the pay of the new roles catch up.

This is subject to consultation.

Basically until the death of the universe, considering wage growth on MF...
I have to say, it’s a victory for BASSA. BA have demonstrated that this wasn’t really for money (or otherwise they wouldn’t concede this much) and have given a masterclass on how not to run Industrial Relations.
Mixed Fleet Unite as usual played the part of the wallpaper, it seems.

But still the move to a single fleet?

Don't forget basic pay isn't everything. The allowances changes may add up to more than a 20% cut - not sure. But also a single fleet operating mixed flying on a MF style scheduling rules will bring productivity improvements meaning less crew needed overall (vs 3 fleets) and the single fleet will bring back office simplicity.
