BA lounges : COVID-19 closures and reopenings

List of Lounges Currently OPEN to BA Passengers (open wiki for details)

This wiki includes details of open lounges accessible to premium (F/J or Gold/Silver) passengers travelling on BA operated services, either within the terminal BA depart from or accessible via airside transfer.

Other lounges may be accessible for passengers willing to transfer landside to other terminals or concourses, although this is generally not recommended due to time constraints as a result of needing to re-clear security. Additionally, some airports may offer pay-in lounges which are not otherwise accessible by BA premium passengers (either temporarily or permanently).

Most open lounges are operating with a limited food and beverage service, and other services may be unavailable or modified.

For opening hours, please check the oneworld lounge listing at https://www.oneworld.com/airport-lounges?location= which is now being regularly updated.

If your airport isn't listed below, this probably means there is no lounge available for BA premium passengers (either temporarily or permanently) - please check the oneworld listing for the most up-to-date information.

I'm flying in J this week. The oneworld website says Galleries South is open [https://www.oneworld.com/airport-lounges?location=LHR]. However, the Wiki in this thread suggests Galleries First will be welcoming J passengers.

Does anyone know if Galleries South is indeed open or if I will be directed to Galleries First?

Thanks

Upon my visit to LHR last Friday I was able to access the first lounge as a J pax, I seemed to be the only lounge open in T5

So just to give an update, I’m currently in Galleries First. CW passengers that are not Gold can also use the First Wing since CW check in is closed, apparently this change was implemented today.

I used CW check in 2 weeks ago, and then went through first security etc, it was dead, so it makes sense to close the CW check in too.

At the risk of veering wildly off-topic... The approach to selling alcohol during the third lockdown has really flummoxed me.

If the issue is people drinking on the street and congregating, ban drinking on the street and supplying alcohol in open containers. Some localities in the UK already have such bans.

Instead, the ban applies not only to selling alcohol in open containers (i.e. for outside drinking - quite a few bars in Newcastle did this in the run-up to Christmas), but as KeaneJohn says, also to closed containers to take-away. This includes those supplied by restaurants - so now we have a situation where I can pay a good restaurant for an expensive meal to eat at home, but they aren't allowed to sell me a bottle of wine to drink at home to go with it. I've been making a big effort to support some local independent restaurants during the lockdowns, but there's only so much food I can eat - a bottle of wine would help their bottom line. Given the mark-up on alcohol, this must be really affecting the profitability of smaller restaurants who are trying to make ends meet by offering takeaways.

Yet I can wander into the nearest Tesco sorry, Sainsbury's, and take whatever alcohol I bought onto the street and drink it. So if the objective is to prevent on-street drinking, the current ban doesn't address the actual issue of people congregating on the street.

The restaurant can deliver the alcohol or you can arrange for click and collect (different to takeaway).

I’m hearing there’s a legal challenge against the government to prove the data/science that alcohol indoors is a greater risk than outdoors with a view to getting all pubs open on 12 April if there’s no proof. Not sure if it will work, the people behind it think so so will it mean lounges can serve alcohol in April as opposed to May. Who knows. I’m hoping it’s the former whatever the outcome with a domestic flight on 18 April.

Lounges served alcohol up to when lockdown 3 started on 6 January. This was permitted under tier 4 restrictions. Therefore if the rules are relaxed back from the tier 4+ level we are at now to the pre 6 January tier 4 state, it may be alcohol is available again.

Whether than happens on 29 March, 12 April, or 17 May is not clear. However if I had to guess I would say probably 12 April.

Actually if you scroll back through this thread you can see lounges stopped alcohol on Jan 13th. I was drinking Champagne in GC and GF myself on Jan 11th.

But I won't attempt to predict when they will begin serving alcohol again. I'll just say I hope it is back on come summer!

Is there any news on when lounges at JFK will re-open? I've a trip for November booked and would really like to eat in the lounge pre-departure as on the last flight out.

I would assume only when the travel ban on EU / UK & Ireland citizens is lifted which will allow, somewhat, normal passenger traffic to resume and thus make it worthwhile for BA to reopen their lounges.
While it is still crystal ball time, the U.S., on it's current vaccine trajectory, will be in a position to offer a jab to all adults who want one by August, so I think by late summer they may look to re-open certain travel corridors with equally low case countries, which hopefully will be the U.K. / Europe by then!

It’s the government actually trying to make a policy that will work in real life, rather than implement one created by armchair policymakers with no thought to reality.

The previous situation led to big problems in many areas, where pubs sold drinks to people who effectively turned the street outside into the crowded pub of old. Landlords paid lip service to asking customers not to - usually by putting up a sign saying don’t drink outside - but they would struggle with enforcement (and it’s not really in their interests to enforce it either). In theory and on paper you’re right, it should be possible to ban congregations drinking, but in reality we don’t have the volume of police or standards officers required to enforce that properly either, nor the political will to do so.

So the policy decided to cut off the problem at source - and here’s the thing, it has worked. Practically, it’s been a big success.

If people had been drinking Sainsbury’s purchases in large groups outside the shop then I imagine the response would have been different. But they haven’t, so it didn’t need to.

That's plenty of time. Should the current status quo hold, you can always re-book on AA and use their lounge at T8 (open 4 am to 8 pm). Expect nothing extraordinaire, though (but they serve free food, and you can buy more at the bar).

I think it'll coincide with the lifting of the national lockdown.
