British Airways fleet: New aircraft deliveries, retrofits, and retirements

In the past few years BA has had a large fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft enabled BA to retire the B737, B747 and B767 fleets, along with the B777-200 (non-ER) fleet. Retirement of selected A319 aircraft is currently in progress. The A318 fleet has also been retired, without replacement. At BACF the E170 has been retired in favour of the E190.

This Wiki has been divided into:
  • Projected Fleet
  • New Arrivals
  • Retrofits
  • Retirements
  • Historical Fleet
(Click on the aircraft type, where there is a link, to go to the relevant details in this wikipost.)

A321ceo:

All 14 shorthaul A321ceo aircraft have now been reconfigured from CY205 to CY218. These feature Pinnacle seats throughout and still have tables in CE (unlike the A321neo aircraft), although they no longer feature overhead screens.

Retirements

With all the new arrivals there are also some much loved/hated (*delete as applicable) older aircraft heading for scrapping. Until 2015 most of these ended up in Victorville (VCV) in California for storage and ultimately part out for scrap. Since then most ex-BA planes have been sent to St Athan (DGX) in Wales for scrapping with some 747s sent to Kemble (GBA) in England.

I’m on the BA191 to Austin on 21st Sep - just had notification that it has switched from A350 to 777 and based on the CW seat map (up to row 16) I think this means a 777-300. Given the seat map when I went in to change the seats automatically allocated was the 2-4-2 config, I assume this means no chance of a refurbed one with Club Suite? Was really looking forward to trying it but if not, heyho,.

I appreciate your strong dislike of BA tactics and management, but it could be argued that BA Euroflyer has provided several hundred jobs at Gatwick that would not have beenhere this summer had all short haul flying been stopped from that airport. Also staff shortages at Gatwick Ground Services (100% owned subsidiary) have led to the staff there receiving well deserved increased pay rates and the return of free or discounted staff travel. The staff at GGS are a good team and the boss is a very hands character.
Skipness, we are probably never going to agree about BA at Gatwick which is fine. However your continued critique of the operation there can be wearing.
A while back you were commenting that BA Long haul at Gatwick would probably not survive but it is now expanding again after a couple of difficult years.
I believe the BA operation in all its forms at Gatwick has a future serving a large and fairly prosperous point to point leisure market with also some VFR and business travel thrown in.
It's not personal fella, and in the same spirit you might want to be a bit less of an uncritical fanboy falling over yourself to praise BA's "commitment" to Gatwick. I've been flying out of Gatters on BA since 1993 and for every single year I can remember, the cry has been "more cuts to be needed before we can make money." They're still doing the same thing they've always done, cutting left right and centre and shoving old hand me down short haul airframes from LHR or second hand tin from Wizz up against competitors who not only pay their staff better but fly more modern aircraft. They're hiring staff who will spend their whole career looking at colleagues elsewhere (LHR) wondering why their own conditions are so much worse, it's a cancerous idea to have in any org. I remember you trumpeting the company line that BA Gatwick was a profitable business centre until BA came out and openly said that wasn't true and it was losing so much money that unless staff took yet another kicking they'd close it down. It's just incompetence, if they can't get it right after so long, just stop doing it and let someone else have a go, market share isn't worth Jack if it's costing you that much money. No idea why you get so emotionally invested in this org, they're not remotely the same company they used to be. You cite GGS, a company set up to rescue the ruins of what was left once BA dumped their loyal ground staff to Swissport who lost control and forced BA to take handling back in house, asking the same staff to do the same job for much, much less. I believe it's called BOHICA.....
Can I help you likes this.

BA are about half way through the 777-300 refurbs with a couple in progress so there's a slim chance things may change in the next month. There are a couple of threads dedicated to 777 seating including updates you may be interested in:

I was not going to respond to this post however I feel obliged to say that I always try to be polite, accurate and positive. You say not 'personal' but then continue with some comments that are quite personal and for some daft reason
they have got to me. I will refrain from posting for a while to think things through. I will respond to private messages as that is the proper and polite thing to do. Best wishes.

ZBLF had another flight today, its eleventh so far. At 2hrs 44 it's the sort of length you'd expect for a Customer Acceptance Flight so delivery may be imminent. The recent monthly check flights have only been around an hour in length.

What is the status of the 78X planned deliveries? Is the wiki up to date? (Thanks to whoever is keeping it up to date!)

And are BA crewed-up to accept and operate additional aircraft…?!

Boeing has a massive backlog of about 200 787s. It’s not really sure when BA will receive theirs and, crucially, in which state they’ll be in. Boeing historically had a bad habit of delivering planes with plenty of defects, and BA rejected/delayed the delivery of the first 78Xs a number of times. I wonder how the new birds, especially those that’ve been stored in Victorville and elsewhere for months, will fare.

The frames up to ZBLG have all been built, flown and are in various states of readiness. With a following wind BA could hope for them all to be delivered this year - if they want them. The wiki says LH and LI are also due this year. I'd put money on that not happening as they don't appear in the known production schedule yet. Boeing slowed their new build 787 production rate down to one a month and are only aiming to ramp up to five a month by early 2023. Could be mid-late 2023 before LH gets on the production line.

LH bought over Vistara and others. Where’ve you been.

they’re getting their first at the end of the month

United is getting their 78X from September 5th

BA should not be too long after. The December schedule requires 5 jets.

let’s see how it pans out. But I’d reckon they’d get about 2 or so this year.

as for quality assurances, the FAA won’t allow boeing to deliver 787s if they are not up to quality customers contracted for. So I won’t be worried about that

BA's next (and 13th) A350, G-XWBM, had its Customer Acceptance Flight this morning (1hr 44mins), so hopefully things went well and we'll see it being delivered in the next week or so!

Do we know when the new galley config is coming? BA are running out of new A350s to install it on!

Not sure if you’re just joking, but I think they meant G-ZBLH not Lufthansa :P

I haven’t read the full article (paywall) but per the Air Current the backlog is going to be very, very slow to clear - they expect four deliveries in quick succession (I think we’ve had two to AA, I imagine the next two are one for Lufthansa and G-ZBLF), followed by another “halt”. So I’d assume this means no guarantees on getting four other BA planes by end of year.

Glad someone got it.

You're correct there are no guarantees the assembled 787s will arrive this year, it's just that all of BA's aircraft are out of storage and at either CHS or Everett so I'd guess they're towards the front of the list. Time will tell.
