British Airways fleet: New aircraft deliveries, retrofits, and retirements

In the past few years BA has had a large fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft enabled BA to retire the B737, B747 and B767 fleets, along with the B777-200 (non-ER) fleet. Retirement of selected A319 aircraft is currently in progress. The A318 fleet has also been retired, without replacement. At BACF the E170 has been retired in favour of the E190.

This Wiki has been divided into:
  • Projected Fleet
  • New Arrivals
  • Retrofits
  • Retirements
  • Historical Fleet
(Click on the aircraft type, where there is a link, to go to the relevant details in this wikipost.)

A321ceo:

All 14 shorthaul A321ceo aircraft have now been reconfigured from CY205 to CY218. These feature Pinnacle seats throughout and still have tables in CE (unlike the A321neo aircraft), although they no longer feature overhead screens.

Retirements

With all the new arrivals there are also some much loved/hated (*delete as applicable) older aircraft heading for scrapping. Until 2015 most of these ended up in Victorville (VCV) in California for storage and ultimately part out for scrap. Since then most ex-BA planes have been sent to St Athan (DGX) in Wales for scrapping with some 747s sent to Kemble (GBA) in England.

Current projections for FAA to allow Boeing to resume 787 deliveries is the "second half of 2022", with some reports suggesting 3rd quarter of the year. After it receives approval I guess it then depends on what position in the line BA are and also how quickly it can (and wishes to) reactivate the fully built and stored 787-10s. My hunch is that combined with the staff shortages and a pared back Summer 22 programme, it will probably be early 2023 as a minimum before we see them starting to filter through beyond the current 2 already in the fleet. I don't suspect BA are in the biggest rush to bring back airplanes into their fleet in the immediate short/medium term whilst they don't have sufficient staff to appropriately manage them within the operation.

Additionally, much of the east Asian network is still suspended so it's unlikely BA need the capacity anyway.

Tbf BA's East Asian network is quite limited anyway. ICN and KUL were ditched just before the pandemic. India is pretty much fully open and consistently high loads and demand. As in SIN and the all of BA's Middle Eastern network too. It's only really BKK, PVG, PEK and of course Japan that are missing. However, with whispers of Japan reopening from June onwards, that should grow soon and perhaps depending on the demand following any re-opening, they may reintroduce HND and NRT sooner.

Slightly off topic but were ICN and KUL really ditched before the pandemic? I seem to recall that they were cancelled on a permanent basis in December 2020, with some kind of suggestion that they may return in more normal times.

Yup. The cancellation, or ‘permanent suspension’ in BA’s words, was announced towards the end of 2020. Seoul definitely ran a few months into lockdown.

It will be interesting to see if the 4 remaining A321ceos in mid haul configuration make a return, or whether they are retired or converted to short haul configuration.

I would be very surprised if these 4 aircraft re-enter service in their current configuration as I see no future in it. If, and it’s a big if, they are retained I believe that they will be converted to CY220 configuration.

Wonder why they paid to store them all this time if they were only going to be retired? They did hang onto some A319s though so plans very much in flux as the market splutters.

Does anyone know when we may see G-XWBM onwards getting delivered?

And still no word on further 787-10 deliveries, im guessing. I bet BA are concerned as they will surely need the frames to deliver the schedule in winter!

I’m not sure on the A350s, but regarding the 787s they are simply not certified to be delivered. Boeing requires FAA to approve various things before they can be delivered. (Boeing have not delivered a single 787 to anyone for 12 months.) This approval keeps getting pushed back. Now until “second half of 2022” from the just gone May. Boeing have about 120 planes to deliver so it’s a question of how quick they can deliver the backlog and which customers are the priority/need them quickest.

A big issue here is that Boeing had a program where the folks inspecting their aircraft were Boeing employees. Growing up in Seattle, and having family members working for Boeing, I've known a few of these people. However, apparently the inspectors in Charleston, S.C. weren't quite up to the previous standards. This caused quality problems, and the FAA decided that it was no longer adequate for Boeing to self-inspect. Worse though, is that it's not like the FAA has an army of inspectors to take over. Either they can poach inspectors from Boeing and re-train, or they need to train new inspectors. This takes time. Finally, the inspectors I knew have all pretty much retired, so I would guess that the Boeing inspectors in Charleston were pretty inexperienced to begin with. It's probably still going to take quite some time before we see another 787-10 come off the line in Charleston.

Does anyone know when we may see G-XWBM onwards getting delivered?
The current rumour is that the next batch of A350’s will be delivered with either a 4-Class layout or in a different layout than the current ones in service. If this is the case, I reckon it may take some time for BA to provide specs to Airbus and to order new seats and negotiate price etc. before they can be installed onboard and delivered.

I personally won’t believe it until I see it lol

From Twitter. ZBLD was ferried VCV-PAE yesterday. A sign of Boeing preparing for deliveries again?
