Been to the airport, but not the city?

BA were due to fly me to Chicago next weekend. It was to be my first visit to the city, except ……… I’ve been through ORD at least a dozen times.

So it set me thinking – what other BA destinations have I seen the airport, but never the city?

ORD – In my days of AAdvantage mileage runs ORD was often the cheapest gateway, and I have also started a fair few holidays connecting to the west of there!

DFW – ditto

Also, SAN, AUS, IAH, DEN, PHL.

My European ones are probably more shocking! As a leisure only traveller BA has taken me to or from

AMS, MAD, BCN, MXP & LIN, BRU, DUS, FRA, VIE, BUD

but I have never been past the airport premiter fence of any of them.,

Is your list longer/more outrageous, or your travel pattern more odd?

Only a few for me

ORD on transit to MSY

MSY - landed and went straight to my ship about 80miles down the Mississippi

FRA - on transit back from HND

Think there are several package holiday airports my parents took me to as a lad and we never stayed actually in the town the airport was in, ala Palma, Arrecefie and Málaga, but I'd say they were tenuous

CVN - It is not even in the same city, county or state as Cincinnati (Ohio) - my journey ususally ends in North Kentucky which is where Cincinnati Airport is located!

Helsinki and Madrid. Both last year. Was due to go this year and actually make an effort to go into the city for both, however the coronavirus put a stop to that idea along with BA dropping HEL.

FRA I have been through countless times in the last few years without leaving the airport, its around 15 years since I was last in the city.

Not many for me. Can only think of DFW but I'm sure there must be a few others.

Excellent question, OP - it'll bug me for the rest of the day now!

I suppose it also depends a bit on definitions. I took the above to mean places where I never left the airport. If I consider places I've been to on business where I've seen precious little more than a hotel, office and airport there'd be quite a long list.

Great idea for a thread. Here are the airports I've visited, but not the city:

BKK (transited from SYD to LHR in 2010)
CPH (back to back in 2013)
DXB (transited from LGW to BLR and back again in 2015 on EK)
DUS (did exit the airport to get the train straight to and from CGN in 2016)
DOH (transited many times from 2016 to 2019 to and from various destinations on QR)
PHX (transited from EWR to HNL in 2017 on AA)
IAD (transited from LAX to LHR in 2017 on AA to BA)
HEL (transited from LHR to TLL and back again in 2017 on AY, although left the airport to stay at the airport Hilton)
TLL (back to back in 2017 on AY)
OSL (transited from DOH to LHR in 2018 on QR to BA and twice in both directions in 2019 - left the airport to stay at the airport Radisson Blu in 2019)
ZRH (back to back in 2018)
LIN (back to back twice in 2018)

There are more occasions where I've done back to backs or transited airports without visiting the city, but have visited the city in question at least once previously or since.

I can think of
KIN - Stopped on the way back from HAV on Air Jamaica
PHL - on the Way to LAS
DFW - on the way to LAS
CVG - on the way back from LAS
PHX - on the way to LAS
ATL - various destinations

I'm thinking connections or b2bs only here.
I guess DOH may be on many people's list but not on mine as QR put me up in a city hotel after a missed connection and I had a wander around.

Not too many from me; ORD, EWR, CPH and AUH in recent years. Then, a couple from the annals of time.

BFS in circa 1984 to fly on a Trident before they left the fleet.
SKG on Olympic as they routed ATH-SKG-LHR on certain days of the week. Again, circa 1984.

Good thread!

Not many for me. Only 3 come to mind:

DOH - a few times to / from the Far East and NZ

CLT - so many AA connections there

PER - medical diversion on a SYD-DOH which eventually became SYD-PER-MCT-DOH. 22 hours without disembarking 😮

CPH. I've been there dozens of times - around once a month for four or five years.

But I've never been to Copenhagen.

I have a client in southern Sweden, so for me it's a case each time of exiting the airport, jumping straight into a (Swedish) taxi and heading over the bridge to Malmo.

I keep saying I must stay an extra day, but it never happens.
