I doubt it's an emergency, there were plenty of alternate airports. Also, it's not squawking an emergency.

Maybe Ghana has just changed entry requirements due to COVID-19, and that would have meant lots of people being denied entry?

If its an emergency, I don't know but Ghana will close its borders today until 2300 on 5th April

It did earlier squawk 7700 (general emergency)

That’s strange. The flight was shown as cancelled this morning.as Ghana closed its boarders at midnight Sunday.

could they have hoped to keep BA78 (the return) as repatriation flight? but then again it wouldn't have been BA81 going out

I am no pilot but shouldn't they avoid exactly this, and instead select their transponder code in a way that it doesn't come to a temporary 7700?
