BA81 [LHR-ACC B744 G-CIVN] returned to LHR [and might have declared an emergency?]

Anybody know what's going on?

DYKWIA Mar 23, 2020 12:10 pm

I doubt it's an emergency, there were plenty of alternate airports. Also, it's not squawking an emergency.

Maybe Ghana has just changed entry requirements due to COVID-19, and that would have meant lots of people being denied entry?

If its an emergency, I don't know but Ghana will close its borders today until 2300 on 5th April

ELAL Mar 23, 2020 12:15 pm

It did earlier squawk 7700 (general emergency)

That’s strange. The flight was shown as cancelled this morning.as Ghana closed its boarders at midnight Sunday.

could they have hoped to keep BA78 (the return) as repatriation flight? but then again it wouldn't have been BA81 going out

In which case, why would it have squawked 7700?

reason COVN as in COVID and no EU261? Or is COV another cancellation code?

Was it just for a very short while? If so, probably just 'cycling' while dialling up that might just have been caught in the ADS-B.

Not sure actually, but interesting theory, thank.

I am no pilot but shouldn't they avoid exactly this, and instead select their transponder code in a way that it doesn't come to a temporary 7700?
