I love the A380 however the B747 is much better with freight capacity so with reduced demand, low fuel prices, higher cargo yield and capacity plus a smaller flight crew team to put on unpaid leave, I can see the A380s being grounded until the crisis is over in favour of the B747 continuing operations.

Where will BA park their planes?

With most flights being cancelled, where will BA park all their planes? Is there enough space at Heathrow for all the Heathrow based operators?

Not enough space at Heathrow - but there will be space at the outstations and I've heard that some may be heading to the Norfolk coast. If they are being stood down for an extended period of time, I suspect they will head to the desert in the US to stay dry

Look at BA Source. You will see that they have already put a number of Cityflyer E190 to Norwich for storage.

This is a very good question. During Y2K it was proposed to ground all of the world's aircraft over New Year's Eve. It was then realized that there wasn't enough room to park them all. It may be that there is enough cargo traffic to keep enough planes flying so there is enough room. Otherwise, perhaps on some motorways/autobahns/freeways?

There’s plenty of space at PIK, where BA already has an engineering base.

Parking in the desert might be the preferred option but how will flight crew get in and out of the US or indeed anywhere else that has a handy and convenient desert?

BA were using Chevron aerospace at PIK to do some of the initial A320 densification work. This is all now done in Madrid.

BA's own engineering bases are CWL (long haul), GLA (shorthaul), LHR and LGW.

There’s probably quite a bit of space at SOU......

They’ll find spaces around the gaff - PIK, STN and others have huge aprons to fit a few nose-to-tail, BA doesn’t have that many really. And I’d be amazed if they didn’t keep a lot of the big ones running as freighters - cargo yields are skyrocketing at the moment. 77Ws could probably make money with no pax on some routes at the moment.

I don’t think anyone expects ALL transatlantic services to stop, some people will keep flying, just on a much reduced schedule. Don’t forget BA staff can fly AA/UA if necessary too.

Indeed, LH group are still maintaining four routes, and BA are likely to maintain a handful too. I am sure it will be possible for crew to position back.

Noticed that AA are cutting 75% of their longhauls it's going to get pretty busy in victorville, Mojave etc.

Wonder if there's some ex RAF bases eg Newquay and Machrihanish that would be suitable in the short term. Both should have long enough runways and are still in civilian use.

There is also the cost per day to park up BA's unused planes, LHR will be no doubt the costliest location to park airframes, especially if 30days plus a big sum will be saved by flying to outlying cheaper parking airports .

It is what Flybe use to do overnight, move planes empty to park overnight at less cost, eg Southampton to Doncaster, then fly planes back to Southampton from Doncaster for the 7am first flights out to eg Amsterdam. I am sure BA will similarly be trying to save $1000's by using cheaper parking

Given the somewhat exceptional status quo would LHR not waive some of the parking fees to BA? Failing that Purple Parking are doing some good meet 'n' greet offers at the moment.
