Way back when, when I worked for BA, the Sydney flight did used to go on to Melbourne and back and, if my memory is correct, it used to alternate with Brisbane at one point. We are talking mid/late ‘90s. But there was never any money in it...an extra set of crew was required (I think the same crew took it from SYD to MEL and back, then overnighted in Sydney again before taking it back to BKK and passenger loads were low...having under 40 was the norm! I’m sure the crew on that flight told me (I was working in the BA/QF alliance at the time, and so was a regular on the route...) told me that doing the LHR BKK SYD MEL SYD BKK LHR meant they were away for almost 10 days, though on reflection that seems a lot!

Yes, they will lose F class. They won't need it anymore. Only Business, Premium Economy class and Economy class. I think they will serves 2 or 3 meals.

Remember that apart from their nonstop PER-LHR, QF are currently evaluating the viability of a nonstop SYD-LHR. I have a suspicion that if they feel that this is viable they will go for it as it would give them a clear advantage over all others (including BA) on the SYD-LHR route if only because it would show first on many GDS as the only nonstop as well as shortest option. By contrast, the idea of both flying via SIN will make their offer neither higher nor lower up than competitors.

Yesterday I overheard an inflight manager telling a few of his crew colleagues on the T5 transit that this route is soon to be launched. Their specific chat was around hoping to enjoy a 3 night crew stopover. Thought I’d share here although of course may just be idle gossip!
